Two Issues

Pros: good handsome desk as illustrated.
Cons: likely shipping damage; annoying locking system.
Model Number: ALE SD216030BW
"My first issue with this desk is the poor packaging for shipping by big rig. Stuff gets bashed by that method. When my desk was delivered, I immediately cut the straps and checked it out. The two rear corners of the desk top had been smashed. I almost declined delivery, but figured that I could hide that damage with a hutch shelf I built for it. After having two neighbors help me carry it up two flights of stairs and turning it upside down to install the four legs, I discovered that the metal cabinet had also been damaged. After beating the steel with a hammer, I was able to get the leg brackets to fit. THIS DESK NEEDS TO BE BETTER PACKAGED FOR FREIGHT SHIPPING. Inspect it carefully before signing the papers! My second issue is with the drawer locking system. The key lock is in lap drawer. When the lap drawer is locked into place, ALL drawers are locked. Good so far. But when you unlock the lap drawer, a spring pushes it into your belly. The only way to keep the lap drawer shut is to LOCK it there, but then you can't open any other drawers. I tried to disable the whole locking system so that the drawers could function same as a desk without any lock at all, but you would have to destroy the desk to do so. This is a stupid locking system that is quite annoying. Otherwise, once you load it up with files and supplies, it operates well, and sounds solid."

Secret to Opening Drawers

"This is a fantastic desk for the price. It looks very nice, came quickly and was easy to assemble - although it will take two people if you are not strong enough to flip a 250 pound desk over by yourself.
After assembling the desk, we had trouble figuring out how to open the drawers. It doesn't seem like it should be too hard, but we couldn't figure it out for the life of us. The directions don't tell you, so we ended up having to call the manufacturers to find out. Here's what they told us: The trick is for the center 'pencil' drawer to be unlocked and pulled out approximately 1-2" (this will disengage the drawer locking mechanisms)... and voila! the drawers opened nicely! This might be a nuisance for some people, but works nicely for us since we have small children around and they won't be able to open the drawers unless they know the 'secret!' :-)
We were very impressed with how quickly the manufacturer responded to us and how nice they were! They even offered to send us a new center 'pencil' drawer to replace ours since it was slightly bent during shipping and difficult to open. Awesome customer service!
And, they're considering adding instructions about the drawers in the future... which we think would be a great idea!
Overall we are very pleased with our purchase!"
