Great Drinking Water RO System

Pros: great tasting water
Cons: none
Model Number: WP4-V
"I installed this RO system about six months ago and we have been enjoying tasty drinking water and ice ever since. While the system can be installed under the kitchen sink, I did it a little differently. I installed the RO system in my laundry room and added some additional valves and tubing to supply my kitchen sink, refrigerator ice maker and standalone ice maker via tubing run in the crawl space. In addition, I plumbed a drain line from the RO system to a storage barrel outside of the house (no freezing temperatures here in San Diego) so I can use all of the brine water for irrigation in my yard and garden instead of letting it flush down the drain.
I also added a permeate pump to the system to increase the efficiency (less brine water generated) and pressure.
There are lots of instructions on the web for making these types of modifications. I did the complete installation in a day.
Note that if you don't FULLY seat the tubing in the press-in fittings, you are asking for leaks. Push hard until the tube bottoms out and you should be leak-free. Also, if you are going to run additional tubing, it's worth purchasing a tubing cutter (about $5) to make sure your tubes have perfectly straight ends so they seat properly."

Worth every penny

Pros: super easy intall
Cons: none whatsoever
Model Number: Premier WP4-V Reverse Osmosis System with Monitoring Faucet
"Very simple to install with detailed directions for any everyday Joe. Great tasting water from a reputable filter maker. Ice maker attachements options. Ice cubes are diamond like clear. Los Angeles water district tap water definitely do not match up with the quality you will produce with this filter for your every day needs. Bought one about 6 years ago with no regrets. Very well made product backed by Costco's satisfaction guarantee.
Best money I ever spent.

Bad!

"This was a bad choice. The water had an awful smell and did not taste good. We changed the filters after 4 months and it didn't help. We called the company and they were rude, so we returned it. This is the third water system we have owned and it was the worst."

Love the water!

Pros: performs flawlessly, easy to install, produces the best tasting water, great value from costco
Model Number: WP4-V
"This is a great system, even better than expected. Our installation was somewhat unusual in that we decided to mount the filters outdoors but it still went without a hitch.
No sounds come from this unit, simply the best tasting water at the turn of the faucet. How can water that has no flavor taste so great?

Great Purchase

Model Number: WP4-V Reverse Osmosis
"We have had our unit for 5 years now, and still getting great service. Water tastes great and we couldn't do without it. If and when it stops working we wil purchase another. Advise that you have a professional install it. After installation, it's easy to order filters online and change them out yourself when needed."

Product problems

Cons: pure junk product
"This product is pure junk. Missing faucet and several plumbing parts when opening the box. Faucet leaks and makes noises. There is no quality control here as I have purchased several of these and each one has missing or non working parts. I would NOT recommend this product to anyone and surprised that Costco continues to handle it"

Careless installation by the company

Model Number: WP-4P
"The assembly of the product was easy. When I turned the water supply there was a huge water leak. I removed the filter bowl and found that the O-ring was improperly installed by the company, which also made a dent in the bowl. I called the customer service agent # 967. He sent me a wrong spare parts inspite me sending him the email with right spare parts number. I called customer service again today and still waiting for the replacement parts. I have been waiting for approx 1 month now. Horrible customer service. Hope the company hires good customer care agents, if they want to survive this economy, they better do."

Worst Purchase Ever

Cons: too many connections
Model Number: WP-4V
"After purchase and installing it the following weekend, discovered numerous leaks one of which was a gusher. I had 1 big leak from the membrane housing (turned out it was completely missing the O-Ring), the Adapt-a-valve connection to the green hose and one from under the faucet. Tech support was very helpful and mailed me a new faucet, an O Ring and a Adapt-a-valve. After installing the above, I now saw a small leak from the sediment housing. Opened that up, reseated the O-Ring, Put silicone tape on the threads and reinstalled. Now I had a leak from under the faucet again. The Product has Tooooooo many connections all of which are the quick connect type that are prone to leaking. I am returning the product."

Good so far

Pros: self installation, affordable
Cons: somewhat confusing instructions
Model Number: WP4V
"Got the system a few weeks ago, and so far so good. The other reviews mention some issues. I'll just say the water quality is excellent and we are pleased with the unit to date.
My installation guide showed a brass "adapt-a-valve" that doesn't exist and a plastic adapter valve with 1/2" fittings on each end. The picture shows the plastic valve installed right above the shutoff valve, but this isn't possible if you have the typical 3/8" compression fitting coming out of the shutoff valve (as I did). I wasted an afternoon looking for an adapter to go from 3/8" to 1/2" (it doesn't exist either) until some helpful clerks advised the water supply line to the shutoff valve 1st (which are 3/8" on one end and 1/2" on the other end), then the plastic Watts adapter and then to the faucet.
Most of the rest of the installation was easy. The slip connections need to be pushed ALL the way on, so double check and give an extra few tries to make sure they are seated. I took my time, double checked everything and had NO leaks.
The monitor lights never lit up once I removed the paper off the battery. Another reviewer says his monitor has never worked. Turns out my unit had a 100% dead battery (verified with my voltmeter). I installed a new one and still no luck. On a hunch I flipped the battery over + pole up, and it works! The factory installed a dead battery upside down!!
The noise everyone comments on is from the air gap at the faucet, and really isn't that noticeable with normal ambient household noises.
For my first RO system I am pleased overall."

Filters VOC's & Improves taste significantly

Model Number: WP-4V with the Sediment, Carbon Block and VOC filters
"We looked at 2 models: The WP-4V (available on Costco.com) and the RO 4 system (available in the Costco store) and went with the WP-4V since that includes a VOC filter as well. (Not sure what is happening with water anymore after Bush & Cheney exempted Oil and Gas companies from the Clean Water and Safe drinking water acts and with them drilling for Natural Gas all over the country with no controls/regulations).
Installation instructions could have been a lot better. The instructions seek to present a serial numbered approach when actually they should have been written using an object oriented approach.
If you can read instructions PROPERLY and understand them, drill a hole and use a spanner to tighten nuts you should be able to do this yourself. Keep a lot of towels handy and keep water collection containers (like a cookie tray) under the Plastic valve, the Filter housing and the Tank before opening the Plastic valve that sends water into the system. Water leaks will then be collected in these containers and they can be emptied. Leave these containers in place and check them every hour or so for water so you will know there are leaks.
There are 4 parts to the installation (1) Faucet installation (2) Connecting into the cold water supply (3) Connecting into a drainage pipe (4) Connections internal to the product components (the easiest part). You can do each of the first 3 parts separately (on different days) and then connect everything together later.
(1) Faucet installation will require a hole in the sink or countertop and we decided to remove our soap dispenser and use the granite counter top hole for the RO Faucet instead. Faucet that came in the box was Chrome and we would have preferred brushed nickel but that is sold separately (wife not happy !!). Curved chrome faucet tube has a small plastic piece at the end which should not be discarded and should go into the faucet base.
(2) Connecting into the cold water supply was the most challenging part mostly due to the bad quality of instructions in this area. A brass valve configuration is shown but the brass valve does not come with the package so initially it seemed like a part was missing but Tech Support confirmed that only the plastic valve (to tie into ½ inch line) and the brass adapters (to tie into 3/8 inch line) come in the box. The key point with the Plastic valve is that you should not use Teflon tape on any of the threads at either end and not even between the brass adapters and the line that you are tying into. This is not mentioned in the instructions. I had a lot of leakage in this valve, put on more Teflon tape thinking I did not have enough of it and problem did not go away. Finally a call to Tech Support revealed that I needed to remove all the teflon tape for the leaks to stop.
(3) Connecting into the drainage line was straightforward. Instructions were very clear. The only thing to note is that the dripping/gurgling sound you hear when the tank is getting filled is probably due to water dripping into the drain pipe. I can live with this sound in exchange for clean water. There is no sound once the tank is full.
(4) Tubes are colored and instructions are pretty clear. Make sure that you really push the tube into the receiving end without crimping them.
After the setup was complete we turned on the water supply at the Plastic valve and were shocked to find water leaking from the filter housing. Turned out that the O-ring for the Sediment filter housing was not correctly fitted and also the filter housing for the VOC block was not tightened sufficiently. IT IS QUITE SHOCKING THAT THE PRODUCT WAS SHIPPED IN THIS MANNER. So Open all the filter housings, verify the O rings and tighten the housings before you turn on water supply. Once this was done there were no more leakages and after emptying 3 tankfuls, we are enjoying good tasting water.
Contacting Watts Premier Tech Support was very easy (before and after purchasing this) and they are very good (5 starts for small phone wait time and knowledgeable help) at helping you through installation issues.
Also Thanks to Costco for selling this product so that the average home can have safe and tasty drinking water."

Loud and Leaks

Cons: reliability
Model Number: WP4-V
"Drain noise is very loud and annoying. Faucet was good at the beginning - but after six months started leaking drip by drip and now after nine months is leaking in a steady stream unless you put the lever in a three-quarters closed position. No repair tips online. Lots of complaints online about the faucet. Going to buy a replacement and see how it goes (another $60). I would avoid this product."

Why RO's work

Pros: they work well and are inexpensive, they provide very clean water
Cons: recovery is only about 15% (1 in 7).
Model Number: WP5 RO-Pure (has extra final filter)
"Under sink RO's use water to make clean water. If it did not put a lot of water to drain, the water hardness would plug up the membrane very quickly.
We build industrial RO systems and the recovery is higher but it requires pumps and chemical addition to make it work. These systems are the least expensive and lowest maintenance system to get very pure water. The water out of these RO systems (depending on your city water pressure) usually has about 2% of the minerals entering the system. If your city water is 300 parts per million (ppm) minerals, then the RO clean water would be about 6 ppm. That is very clean. The reason it tastes different is that there is no taste to it because it removes almost all the minerals and the chlorine and organics (in the carbon filter). What passes through is an itty-bitty bit of table salt (NaCl) and carbon dioxide gas
I have these at home (2) and in the office and have used them for over 10 years (various models) and they just run. If you have a problem with the waste water sound, you might think of a way of plumbing it to reduce the noise. It is not the system, it is the drain that is usually making the noise.
If you have an issue with the spigot or some other component, remember that these are very inexpensive. That spigot was sold by the manufacturer in China for about $2.00. You can buy a spigot made in the USA (Kohler) for about $160.
The Watts systems are better than most because they sell more of them and really do have pretty good support for a very inexpensive product. Once they are in and running, the tend to just sit and provide water as required.
If you have multiple failures of the same part (spigot) you may have an incorrect installation (consider it)."

Excellent Water- Easy to install

Pros: easy to install, good tasting water, 3 gallon tank provides water for the entire family
Cons: none yet
"This is a great product from Costco, very easy to install (considering I am neither a handy man, nor a good fixer :) ). It took me abt 3Hrs to do it all. The adapt a valve was little difficult to install, I had to get brass coupling to fit to my inlet water pipe, but the rest was just a breeze.
And the water tastes just great, so all in all a very good product."

Good Value RO System

Pros: great tasting water, inexpensive, good vallue
Cons: filter alarm light failure, filters are somewhat difficult to replace, water leaks from faucet periodically
Model Number: Premier WP4-V Reverse Osmosis System with Monitoring Faucet
"Water from Premier RO system taste great, but as with other reviews, I've had problems with leakage and the filter light flashing about a week after installation, and than subsequent failure of light altogether. Still, the water taste great and is great value relative to the cost of the system. This is my 3rd unit in about 8 years, so average life span is about 3 years."

Good Water ... Will Wake the Dead

Pros: lots of clean good tasting water, inexpensive, easy to install and maintain
Cons: noise level, uses lots of water to recharge
Model Number: WP-4V
"We had our kitchen remodeled in April 2011 and replaced several kitchen appliances including the Reverse Osmosis system that came with the house in 1999. The Premier ROS provides all the filtered water we could ever want so that is a big plus over the prior system. The irritating part is that significant amounts of water are used when recharging and the NOISE it makes is really quite distracting and can even be heard in our upstairs bedroom. We close both drains in the kitchen sink when the ROS is recharging."
