not a strong signal

Pros: works great in a car
Cons: not reliable
"i purchased thinking that the gps would always work...well not the story..my dog got out twice and i had the unit all set to go... i never got the alert!!!....and when we tried to track the dog it was not able to get a location.. it came up "could not find."...when i called tech support they said it could be the device was placed under the dogs neck and not on top of his neck??????
you dont have the confidence that the unit will always work...so i give it a fair and should be worse. I will say that it works great in the car when i wanted to know where my son was when he took the car out...lol"

neat thing

"They are still improving it but it's great..I have a little problem with my cell phone coverage....so it's not 100 percent perfect, check the map for your coverage.
GREAT people running it and they are very helpful.
Also, you have to keep up on charging the batteries...it takes an hour, they remind you by email when they need charging, but they do not yet email you to remind you to put it back on the dog. One guy said he just charges his every day.

Need to find your wandering dog?

"We have a lab-shepherd mix who likes to jump the fence and wander around the neighboring farms and ranches. Unfortunately, there is also a major roadway that goes near our property and if he does this in the dark, I'm petrified that he'll be hit or it takes us forever to find him. With the Dogtracs system...once we activated the "Find" command, it located him within ten minutes and he was safely home.
It was easy to set up and activate and I inputed the commands from my Blackberry (text messages). If I had been at home and online, I could have used the satellite map feature. Definitely a good purchase (my husband wants one to find his misplaced keys :) )"

Great Product

"I used the dog-tracs to find my dog Molly one week after purchase. It was worth every penny and more as I found Molly visiting the neighbor's front yard about two blocks from my house in the span of about five minutes. Great product!"

Works on a Harness

Pros: it does work, unlimited finds at no charge, great web interface, well engineered unit
Cons: need t-mobile service in your area, needs to be mounted on a harness to "see" the sky, would benefit from a better antenna system, monthly charge, battery not replaceable by user
"The risk of losing my dog is a troubling thought, so the idea that I could attach a device to her collar to find her anywhere, at any time is compelling. The DogTracs is a device about the size of a cell phone that you attach to the dog and it allows you to query its position from a cell phone or computer. An automated reply system sends the GPS coordinates and the nearest street intersection of the dog. An additional feature lets you set a safe area on a Google map and have the device alert you if the dog strays from the safe area. The dog’s current position can be displayed on a map on the DogTracs website or texted to your cell phone. I have been checking out my DogTracs unit for about two weeks, now. Initially I had some issues, but those have been resolved. The first issue was that I could not register my Virgin Mobile cell phone on the control site. I contacted DogTracs and after a week, they informed me that they had modified their program to accept my cell carrier. The second issue that I had was that the device was not receiving a signal consistently while hung on the dog’s collar. In order to function properly the device must get a T-Mobile cell signal AND a GPS signal from satellites. Hanging under the dog’s neck is not an optimal location, but attached to a harness, it works much better, even under tree cover. I’d advise anyone purchasing one to test it thoroughly during that initial 30 days to see if it works for you."

Saved Molly's life

"On January 17th it was the coldest day of the year in ny, 5 degrees. Our two labs got out and my family and i were away. We got the alert. Our dogs were found a few hours later because they had gotten onto a beach. The staff and expertise of dogtracs and their device worked. When our dogs were found one of them had gone swimming and had hypothermia. If they were not found when they were the outcome wouldn't have been a happy one."
