Very nice unit

Pros: night vision works really good in darkness
Cons: have to buy a monitor
Model Number: Q-See 8 channel 500gb
"I replaced another Costco DVR of another brand because the old one died. I did quite a bit of research and thought that this would be the best choice for a replacement and I do believe that I guessed right because this thing works so much better then my older unit with proprietary cameras. This system uses the bnc connectors for the cameras so you have a much better choice of camera replacements. The 2 larger cameras w/more leds do a great job of seeing in the dark while the 4 other outdoor cameras are quite good as well. All six of the outdoor cameras outperform my older system. The 2 indoor cameras are functional but don't do all that well in darkness. Q-See has an excellent selection of alternative cameras that you can purchase. I am thinking about getting one of the high resolution outdoor cameras and bringing one of the 4 inside for better night vision inside. We bought 22" monitor which works perfect but you could easily get away with a 19"."

careful about remote access

Pros: price
Cons: you get what you pay for, remote access can be very difficult
Model Number: Q-see 8 channel DVR package
"For the money, it is not a bad system, but if you plan to access the cameras from a remote computer you may be disappointed.
the active-x program they use is not signed and will be rejected by most computers. You must adjust the IE security settings in order to view anything. Something you may not be able to do from a public computer.
Their Tech support is having many problems with this issue. Also the resolution specs make you think it will record 480 X 640 @60FPS this is not true
You can record real time per camera at CIF resolution 240 X 320 this is not bad but don't plan on seeing a lot of detail. The package is a decent deal but the jury is still out on durability - I have had my system for 5 month and the DVR broke after 4 months-- it just stopped working-- I had to send it back and they gave me a new one, but if that happens after 7 more months I will be out of warranty"

Nice system

"The system was easy to install. Had a drop ceiling to run the wires. Wish there was some other way to provide electricity to the cameras besides a bulky power pack, but for the cost, this was a very good deal. Camera are very clearn. I am happy wih this system"

Very nice package

Pros: nice cameras, lots of functionality
Cons: a little loud
Model Number: QSTD5088C-500
"The combination of cameras is very nice. The night vision on the 48030 cameras is fantastic. The recording images in the dark are very crisp. The 28414 cameras are very good, they just have a little less range.
The system has been running for weeks without problems. No hard drive crashes or no reboots like mentioned in other reviews.
The manual is a bit weak and I did have to try both the e-mail and on-line chat assistance. Stick with the on-line chat, e-mail support is lame. They answered one out of three questions the first time around and half answered the other two on the rebound.
It took a while to figure out how to have some cameras record full time and put others on motion. You can actually have a full time record and motion on the same camera which is really nice for reviewing. The motion triggered recording is very cool but takes some trial an error to get the sensitivity right for each camera.
Setting up the network recording is pretty easy as there are plenty of extra instructions and help for that task. Getting IE to allow the download of viewing software takes more time than anything else. Make sure to reset your security settings after a successful download of the viewing software.
Going to try the smart phone viewing next. Make sure to review the phone specs before buying if you already have a smart phone. This DVR model won't work with iPhone but I did find on their site there are a few DVR models that do have support for iPhone.

Q-See 8 Channel H.264 Real-time Recording DVR

Pros: costco took it back
Cons: i cannot recommend it.
Model Number: Q-See 8 Channel H.264 Real-time Recording DVR
"I had planned to replace my 4 Channel Clover DVR. This DVR on my home network computers (any of 3) would only show 1/4 size pictures on the display (No full screen) and you could only view Live pictures. You could not view recorded pictures. You can view recorded and live pictures on dedicated DVR Monitors. The cooling fan was very loud but would be ok in a closet. The pictures on the cameras were just ok. I was not at all happy with this DVR, so I returned it."

Disappointed

Pros: cams alone are worth the price
Cons: fan very noisy, hard drive had a loud whine
Model Number: Model QSTD5088C-500
"I wanted this system to work for a long time without operator attention. The longest the DVR would go without crashing was about 8 hours. Formatting the disk helped some, but not enough. The operator interface was crude and the mouse control was erratic. Q-See did not offer any troubleshooting help, so I returned the unit to Costco."

"Great system, Q-See has the best support in helping me with any questions I had in setting up system.
First time I ever installed a security system. Best value for the money!
