Take it wherever you go. The Philips HeartStart Home Defibrillator is designed to treat one of the nation's leading killers - sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). When SCA strikes, the electrical system of the heart short circuits. Shocking the heart into a normal rhythm is called defibrillation and is the only way to effectively treat the most common form of SCA. Will you be prepared when sudden cardiac arrest strikes? Know the Facts. Fact: Each year, approximately 325,00 people in the U.S. - nearly 1,000 people each day - die from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Fact: Nearly 80% of all sudden cardiac arrest happen in the home. A majority of the time, someone is in the home who could potentially help. That someone could be you. Fact: The risk of sudden death is highest soon after a heart attack, yet SCA is often the first sign of heart disease. In fact, 50% of males and 64% of females who experience SCA report no prior symptoms of heart disease. Fact: With every minute that passes without a shock to the heart, an SCA victim's chance of survival decreases by 7-10% . After 10 minutes, very few SCA victims survive. Early Defibrillation Helps Save Lives. In the case of sudden cardiac arrest, minutes count. For the best chance of survival, a defibrillator should be used within 5 minutes. Unfortunately, less than 7% of SCA victims survive, largely because a  defibrillator doesn't arrive in time. While a defibrillator won't save every victim, many more lives could be saved if more people were reached more quickly. Every Home with a Senior should have one

Pros: fool proof easy to operate voice directions
Cons: none
"I am a National Ski Patrol member with a First Aid certification. As a Patroller with CPR and AED training we annually train on the Professional version of the AED Defibrillator. I know these devices SAVE LIVES! I purchased one for my parents. This layman's unit is fool proof and easy to operate. Once turned on, it verbally gives the user step by step instructions on exactly what to do. It even coachs the user through CPR as necessary. The unit also comes with an integrated training module. In less than 30 minutes, I had the unit set up and my parents fully familiarized and trained in its usage. Hopefully they will never need it, but I rest easier knowing it is there if needed."

Save a life

"We purchased this AED for (hopefully never) use at our lake house. With friends aging along with us and the time it takes for EMTs to arrive, we thought it would be important to have this device handy. It's easy to use. It talks you through the whole process and it gives us some peace of mind out in the country."

Every Home Should Have One

Pros: easy to setup and use., complete and easy to understand instructions., once activated it is automatic., voice commands guide you through its use., high quality product., four year battery shelf life., reasonable cost., automatic self test and battery check.
Cons: none
Model Number: M5068A
"I am a member of our local Citizen Emergency Response Team (CERT) and have taken several CPR and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) courses. I have learned that when a heart attack happens, immediate, emergency response and treatment are absolutely critical. If someone's heart stops, or goes into ventricular fibrillation, treatment must begin within 10 minutes, of the event. The survival rate decreases about 10%, with each minute of delay. When Costco.com started selling Phillips HeartStart Home Defibrillator, I decided to purchase one. This unit is a well constructed, high quality product. It came with a wall mount, adult pads, practice pads, a sturdy carrying case and other accessories. The illustrated instructions are very complete and easy to understand. Setup and use is very straight forward and easy to use. Once activated, the device does a completely automatic assessment and even provides vocal CPR compression counts. It will not deliver a shock unless it is warranted. The battery has a shelf-life of 4 years. I thought the cost was very reasonable, especially when you consider, it may help save a life. Most heart attacks occur at home and this AED is designed for home use, but when I am traveling, this AED is added to my CERT emergency backpack."

This Unit Saved a Life!

Pros: cues rescuer right cpr compression cadence, cues rescuer when to perform rescue breathing, tells rescuer when to deliver shock, tells rescuer when cpr is not required
Cons: none. saved a life!
"I am a practicing physical therapist who owns a private practice. December 12, 2011, one of our regular patients suddenly collapsed in our waiting room. Our technician immediately summoned me and when I was there to render assistance, he was purple and not breathing. I applied this AED I purchased from Costco, turned it on and began chest compressions immediately. The AED instructed me to stop compressions and analyzed, instructed me to press the button to deliver a shock. After the shock, the AED commanded me to resume CPR and what surprised me, provided the right cadence and COUNTED compressions for me and cued me when to administer rescue breathing. After 3 full cycles of CPR, the patient regained consciousness. 3 minutes before the EMTs arrived. We got a call back from our local hospital ED department and was congratulated for using the device and saving this persons life...
This device is simple, helps the rescuer stay calm. Despite adrenaline pumping through your blood, this device is straightforward to use. Thank you Phillips! I am buying a device for our home today."

Might Save A Life

"Considering that as each minute passes after a heart attack their is a 10% less chance of survival, the defibrillator is a good thing to have around. It is easy to practice with, and a "voice" gives the instructions. Won't shock unless there is a shockable rhythm (one receptive to shock)"

Ease of Use

"Just as someone stated in an earlier review, once out of the box, the machine and it's use were easy to understand. Along with the machine is a practice pad set and a plastic human form. Just start it up and listen to the clearly enunciated directions. I'll feel better as we travel in remote places with our RV knowing it is aboard."

Philips HeartStart is PERFECT

Pros: easy to use, cost justifiable, auto-notification for battery and pad replacement
Cons: pads and battery have a shelf life, battery replacement is a bit expensive
Model Number: HeartStart HS1
"My brother, who is an MD, suggested this particular defibrillator to us. We did our usual in-depth research on quality and price and kept coming back to Philips HeartStart at Costco. We are long time members of Costco and respect their return policy and so we purchased this item.
It was VERY easy to understand the set-up and we had it mounted in our pantry within two hours of receiving it. My wife is a retired RN and she really got into the fact that ANY spouse would have no problem using the defibrillator if and when needed. The best part is that it is fool-proof. The machine will not "shock" if it is not needed. These machines are now on every FAA Part 121 commercial airliner in the USA.

Consumer Friendy Life Saver

"This is one of those products I hope I never have to use. However, if I do have to use the Philips HeartStart Home Defibrillator, I feel confident that it will perform. It is easy to set up, and it talks the user through the process of using it when the emergency arises. This product is extremely well built and its functionality is designed very well. I have this product mounted on the wall in the bracket that is supplied with it. I feel secure that it is ready for an emergency, should one arise."

Good deal!

"This is the same unit we used during our First Aid training so we are all set should we need to use it for real. The statistics are amazing on the survival rate with it vs. without..........good insurance."

HeartStart Home Defibrillator

"I'm buying insurance.
With luck, I'll never use it.
My only concern is if the defibrillator will be around me when I need it.
(or if somebody needs it for me:-))

Great product and great price

Pros: comes with a practice kit and first aid kit.
"I purchased this AED for my dental office. I have done extensive research into AED units of all brands, ones far more expensive and This unit has everything that a you could ask for. Beside ease of use, other benifits are that the replacement battery is not to costly. Which will need to be replaced every 4 years and the replacement pads are also affordably priced."

A simple to use lifesaver

Pros: device self-checks itself everyday, least expensive aed (although not cheap!)
Cons: pads must be replaced every 2 yrs ($70), battery must be replaced every 4 yrs ($150)
"The Philips HeartStart is a relatively low cost way to insure yourself and your family against the tragedy of cardiac arrest. This is the only AED (automated external defibrillator) available without a prescription. It is designed to be simple to use with audible instructions so that even a 6 year old can be trained on this device! It literally takes 3-5 min to learn how to use this HeartStart.
In the event of a cardiac arrest, your odds of survival drop 10% with every minute that passes so think about how long it would take for an ambulance to get to your house.
If you or a family member have a history of heart attack, coronary artery disease, or congestive heart failure, you should definitely have one of these in your home. If you are the type of person who routinely spends >$1000 on LCD televisions, computers, jewelry, or alarm systems, why cheap out when it comes to this lifesaver?
By the way, I am a cardiologist and own 2 of these for my home and auto. I have no financial interest in Philips or this device-only an interest in saving lives."
