Very versatile machine

Pros: does all four tasks very well, relatively small footprint, decent price, easy set up
Cons: engine runs hot-- papers curl, no duplex scanning, does not come with an usb cable
Model Number: Brother MFC-8480DN
"My primary goal for buying this B&W laser all-in-one multi-function machine was to replace an office copier which I hardly use, now that I am practically paperless, just about everything is scanned into PDF files these days.
To my pleasant surprise, the machine does an excellent job in faxing, scanning and printing as well.
It is not the fastest copier or printer for the first page, but multi-pages copying and printing are fine. My only disappointment in this area is the print engine must be rather hot (not to the touch, but to the paper) as papers come out curly.
My primary printer is an HP Laserjet 4250. But I am finding myself printing more and more to the Brother. I am on a peer-to-peer LAN, so any computers on the LAN can print to either printer.
This machine is supposed to print and copy in duplex mode, but I have not tried it.
I have a dedicated Fujitsu 6130 scanner. But this Brother MFC scans practically just as well, at a much lower cost. Having said that, however, the Brother MFC does not scan in duplex mode, it only scans on one side of the paper at a time. But as a back up, and with a flatbed, it more than fits my needs.
There is not much to say about faxing. It works. I was very happy to find out I could use NetTalk (a VoIP service similar to MagicJack) to send faxes.
The automatic document feeder does the job well and it's nice to have a legal size flatbed."

Bad product

Model Number: MFC-8460DN
"I bought this machine, and return in 3 days because it cannot print the envelope. It would chewed up on the envelope. I tried 5-6 times, and it did the same thing. I bought the same model the second times, and will return this Friday due to when you copy either from the glass face or the ATF, the copies came out with a white straight line I
Of about 1" at the center. I always love Brother MFC machine, but this time they failed me.

My third 8480

Pros: overall economical
Cons: toner cost
Model Number: MFC8480DN
"I have been using Brother MFC Laser machines for 15 years. This is my third 8480. In general, these printers are reliable and last for approximately 200,000 pages. As compared to a large unit leased from a supply house, you will save $1000"s. They work well in a wired as well as wireless network. I find that the drums Do Not need to be replaced as often as the machine asks."

Best Office Tool for our Insurance Agency

Pros: mfc tools, scanning, software
Model Number: MFC 8480 DN
"By far the Brother MFC Printer/Scaner/Fax is the most important tool in our office. While printing quality is superior, the software for scanning and OCR is the most important tool at a very affordable costs, compared to high end scanners that can run 10-20 times the cost of the brother machine. We are a paperless office and this tool is a complete one in all package."

Endurance athlete of copiers

Pros: strong reliable endurance workhorse printer, good multifunction capability
Cons: scan function not good but does work, have to load the sheet feeder 1 page at a time.
Model Number: MFC-8480DN
"Been using these MFC series printers from Brother for 10 years now for business printing and faxing. We have about 5 of them currently printing 100-150 pages a day on average. Including one of these 8480's We had 2 similar older models for about 5 years that we just about wore out, they still printed farily well, but it just was not running as smooth as desired. They really take a ton of abuse and neglect. We dont service them as much as we should. the drums need to be replaced about once a year and are an expense to consider. A regular cleaning is advisable for good function. Even if they arn't clean regularly they still dont seem to jam as much as other printers, even the more industrial type printers seem to jam more. The Scan function is not very good, much too slow and featureless for todays requirements. If you are buying this for a good monochrome workhorse printer, copier and fax machine its great, but dont get this if you plan on using the scanner more than on a rare occasion. better off getting a stand alone sheet feed scanner for that. Also when using the sheet feed I have one tip. Dont just put all the paper in at once. put the paper in once sheet at a time and then press the copy or fax button. If you just take a stack of papers and put them in the sheet feed it will grab more than one."

Superb for my small office

Model Number: MFC-8480DN
"I had been in the market for a color laser but was becoming discouraged by the refill cost.
Walking past this unit at my Costco it grabbed my attention. It was actually substantial. One that looked like it would belong in a small offfice. It also had a nice instant rebate. I subscribe to Consumer Reports, pulled up on my phone, and put it in my basket without hestitation. I did also need a new fax, really. Not much need myself for a scanner but would be handy if needed. Set up following Monday - even with a wireless router with printing capabilities and works like a champ. Fast. Easy to use and a big cartridge that won't run out too quickly. Use the fax numerous times daily and printer constantly. Unable to speak much about the other features. Copies well too. Not certain this would be the unit for heavy use copying - I can only speak to light usage this way. Fantastic Fax and print capabilites for my use.

Fair At Best

Model Number: MFC 8680DN
"I have owned three Brother MFCs. The first one lasted 5 years without incident and the last two left much to be desired. After about a year, the paper feeder got fussy. This one is the worst. It almost invariably takes more than one page at a time during a fax or copy of multiple pages. About 4 months ago the scanner stopped working regularly. It is now inoperable. I do think Brother is slipping."

Good purchase for a small office.

Pros: fast, great printing quality/speed, easiest network setup, sturdy, workhorse
Cons: can't take any adf abuse (papers w/ staples etc), toner doesn't last as long as the big machines..
Model Number: MFC-8480DN
"This is a great workhorse. We've had this in one medical practice (2 physicians) for 3 years now and it's still going strong. In the other medical agency (20 workers), the ADF rollers started making noise within 1 month due to negligent employees not removing staples/cramming papers in when using the ADF.
Network setup is the easiest I've dealt with. Even when you run into problems (which I always do for some reason..!), the Brother diagnosing tools are very effective and efficient.
Printing quality/speed is top notch. As far as I know, never had any jams/curling/etc.
Toner life obviously isn't as much as the big machines, but that's a given. It's fine.
The weakest part of the machine is the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder). If you have negligent/lazy employees who won't take the staples out of pages, your ADF rollers will start making noises within a month. I didn't even risk it, as soon as they reported noises, I exchanged it at Costco.
Can't beat COSTCO's return/exchange policy with expensive machines like these. Go for it.
By the way, this model or something very close to it (MFC-8460DN) is always available at the 4 or 5 Costcos around us. Save yourself the shipping and just buy it local. Good luck!"

Awesome Multifunction Printer

Pros: less expensive than a color mfp, less consumables cost, collates copies, fax right from your computer, duplex printing
Cons: no duplex faxing
Model Number: MFC-8480DN
"I bought this multifunction printer for my office to replace a Brother MFC-9840CDW. The Brother MFC-9840CDW was two years old and still working well, however, it was slow to warm up from a cold start (rated at 35 seconds warm-up time, but my staff felt like they were constantly wasting time waiting for the old machine to warm up). In addition, even though we never used color, we still had to replace the color toner cartridges at times, which was far too expensive.
We really don't do any scanning. We really just need a combo fax machine and copier (primarily for space reasons), and this fit the bill perfectly. The Brother MFC-9840CDW was rated at 17 pages per minute and the Brother MFC-8480DN is rated at 32 ppm, so it seems like paper is flying out of this new printer. In addition, it still has the auto feed for faxes and copying, and can collate copies which made my staff happy.
The only thing this printer doesn't do that the old printer did was duplex faxing which I did at times (maybe 8 times a year) so we felt that spending an extra $200 for this one feature was not worth it. Just to be clear, you can still have the machine scan a 10 page fax in a few seconds, file the paper and get back to work, while the machine does the rest. You just can't have the machine scan both sides of a paper you are faxing.
This printer arrived super fast - not sure if it was the next day but it was either one or two days max. It was easy to set up - and we were up and running in minutes.
The warm-up time is markedly faster - I believe it's rated at 17 seconds - but to the staff, it is night and day. No more standing at the machine for endless time waiting to make a copy.
This printer is on our local network, and I can send a fax as easy as printing (FYI, we are an all Apple Macintosh office). The old printer did the same thing and that was something I truly did not want to be without.
So, all-in-all, this printer works great. I would definitely buy this one again."

Doesn't Last

"I bought this Brother multi-function and it worked ok. The main problems were that the scanning feature was a bit slow and it wrinkled the paper when you duplex print. The worst thing is that the machine completely gave out after only 10 months."

Very nice

Pros: mere seconds for first page to print., duplexing, tested copy of light pencil and it's excellent.
Cons: paper tray not long enough for legal paper., repairs and consumables can be pricey
Model Number: MFC 8860DN
"I'm an IT manager. We have about 10 similar brothers (8000 series) and they've been hardy and reliable. Forget the 7000 series, the savings is not worth it.
I got this for home. Very satisfied."

"I bought 2 to replace the old machine. but i guess the quality is really not that good. one of the machine is a defect, The only good thing is I got it from Costco so i will be able to return it. But it's a waste of time to go thru all this. Hopefully Brother will get better. I won't recommend this but i will not deny."

Nice Printer for the money

Pros: love the duplex function
Cons: needs bigger paper drawer
Model Number: 8480DN
"I have NO IDEA what those two horrible reviews are all about. I like this printer a lot and I do heavy volume printing fairly regularly. Since purchasing in August, I have printed over 20K copies and had no issues at all. The networking absolutely works and works well. We have it set up so that we can print from laptops anywhere in the house. Also, the feeder is great - I make label sheets using Avery knock offs and the quality is great. I would only change one thing - I wish you could put a whole ream of paper into the drawer."
