High Quality

Pros: high quality
"I've been buying and eating freeze-dried food for years (in backpacking/mountaineering packages). This though is highest quality and I can make my own "meals" for much, much less. Thrive has the highest quality freeze-dried food I've had. After having purchased Thrive in the past, I purchased two of these starter packs."

lack of accurate information

Pros: total product line has a good variety, good information provided on label
Cons: cans easily dented during transport
Model Number: 426531
"this company continues to use descriptions that do not tell the consumer what they are buying. For this package they state that dehydrated items have a shelf life up to 25 years. A true statement, but if you review their total list of foods, one would find that the great majority of dehydrated foods have a shelf life of 8 years or less. They should list for each item the shelf life for that item. In this offering the egg powder has a 3 year shelf life and the beef TVP has a 10 year shelf life. All items in a group offering should have the same shelf life. They could have changed the beef TVP to cooked meat that is freeze dried which has a 25 year shelf life. The 3 year egg powder should have been changed to a freeze dried fruit. Regards"

Milk, Eggs...FANTASTIC!!!

Pros: delicious, easy to make, economical
Cons: tvp but fine in a pinch!
"I purchased two of these along with the grain package and I must say, we can really go a very long way and a LONG time with just these simple boxes. I did recently add the assorted deluxe meats to round out the necessary protein in the event of a disaster, but I must say that daily use with this variety pack is EASY and very, very palatable. The milk is fantastic and can be made to please 2% lovers as well as skim. The eggs are fantastic and you can whip up an omelet or scrambled eggs. All of it can be used in cooking. It's a great pack for starters, apartment dwellers and couples."

seems to store opened well for almost a year now

Pros: great long term food storage, great flavor/comparable nutrition to fresh, good insurance for food shortages
Cons: freeze drying can powder many foods, cost of a can of potatoes vs fresh is very high
"opened a few cans on April 15, 2010 stored in a dark closet about 68-72 degrees, humidity today is 33 percent indoors and 58 percent outdoors. Stored these in original cans. I have been trying not been using them up to see how well they store and it has been almost a year for the corn, peas, and strawberries! I am very pleased with the results for our house. We do live in a manufactured home that has pretty good climate control. If you live in a wet or muggy climate you might need to vacuum seal in canning jars after the containers are opened or use the cans up quickly
the corn is 1/2 used and still very crunchy with a fresh sweet taste, rehydrated and cooked up they still pass for a very delicious fresh tasting side dish of corn, add a little and yum just as when they were first opened.
The strawberries taste good, nearly all used but they have attracted some moisture making them not crunchy anymore, probably because I dip into them often for putting on cereal. I will still use them up on my cereal as they are delicious
the peas 1/2 used and still crunchy just like the corn, I have not cooked them up in awhile but am sure they are as fresh as the corn was.
I had a mylar sample of the eggs and we actually stored it in the refrigerator used them up after several months, and were very good as scrambled mixed with milk salt and pepper.....mixing the eggs half and half with farmfresh organic eggs...we could not tell the difference when mixing the dried eggs with the fresh eggs( but this made the fresh eggs stretch a little farther), used them in cooking as well. will keep the big can for long term storage to use if we don't have access to our fresh eggs.
if these potatoes are the freeze dried chunks we had good luck with them but couldn't keep the can full for the entire year either. Like the other items, the potatoes need to be first soaked in water and then we fried in olive oil with onions and peppers for a good flavor to suit some tastes but frying them up like those frozen squared chunks of hashbrowns in olive oil and salt topping with salsa or ketsup my son couldn't tell the difference. There were some small pieces at the bottom of the can and some powder as with all freeze dried food but added them to mashed potatoes and had no waste.
This is a good product for long term food storage."

Some food good, some REALLY BAD

Pros: some acceptable vegetables
Cons: many horrible fruits & vegetables
"Some of the vegetables such as corn, green beans, cauliflower, & peas are acceptable. However, the carrots, bell peppers, & pearl potatoes are so micro-minced they have neither texture nor taste. The oranges are easily crushed in the can and end up an orange powder. I asked Shelf Reliance about this and they told me they had so many problems with them that they don't sell them anymore. That was months ago and I still see they are selling them online. Why recall when there is money to be made. The pearl potatoes I received were a Shelf Reliance mistake. I ordered the chunk potatoes, the label on the can indicated chunk potatoes, but they were actually pearl potatoes. It took many calls (because they keep saying they had no record of the previous call) and after TWO MONTHS I finally received a return label. There are much better dried food companies on the internet.
Instead of trying to deal with them I just threw out all their mistakes & micro-minced products. I'd give Shelf Reliance one more star if it wasn't for theifr customer service

Great Value Buy!!

Pros: more product for the money than other sites, extremely tasty foods, high nutrition value, long storage life!, convenient serving packs, the "freshest" produce in a can.
Cons: need additional meals to mix and serve a balanced
"I like to experience every emergency equipment bought and this is no different. I hydrated each of the products in the sealed cans and was pleasantly surprised to find a delicious, near-fresh taste with excellent consistancy; the storage life is superb; as these are sealed in serving packs, allows one to reseal the containers with confidence no contaminations will penetrate and spoil the food stores. The nutritional values are consistant with contemporary home menus so one can cook this with confidence in the nutritional values. GREAT PRODUCT for E-Food Storage!"

Great Starter Pack

"I ordered this and have been very happy. Was looking at ordering the 1 year kit but wanted to try out some of the sampler packs for quality assurance purposes. So far I have used the strawberries, potato chunks, TVP meat and the corn. All was delicious. Used the TVP in chili and it was tastier than I had imagined. Recommend this starter kit if you have never tried this before. Have not tried the milk as I am storing that for emergency purposes."
