Food For Health™ Emergency Garden Seeds, 23 Jumbo Seed Packets

Premium Quality Non Hybrid Seeds. Enough seed of each variety to plant about a 50 foot row of each. These varieties have been recommended by Utah State University for short season climates, with excellent adaptability for most regions. The seeds have been sealed in pouches, by variety, and are packaged in a gallon pail with a planting guide. Your unopened seed pouches should store for five years or more depending on storage temperature. The seeds have been carefully dried to their optimum moisture content to increase their storage life. Germination-tested in '12; Rates = 84%-95%

Pros: germ. rates make expectations more realistic;, sturdy re-sealable (ziplock style) packets;, instructions are in bucket so they don't get lost;, detailed planting help for each vegetable type;, bucket & lid sturdy; suitable for re-purposing;, had to stretch to find any "cons."
Cons: no label warning:opening may shorten storage life;, bucket's pull tab fail; used scissors & pried lid;, very hard to open - lid similar 5gal paint bucket;, bucket's handle is flimsy minimizing repurposing.
Model Number: 23 seed varieties; 1 acre garden; 1 gal size bucket
"Seeds are in aluminum foil, sealed packets labeled with vegetable name & variation; amount of seed in oz; germ. rate & test date; purity 99%; & origin USA. All packets are in one 10x8x5 inch, lidded plastic bucket with a pail handle.
The germination rate helps my expectations stay realistic because it foretells what portion of seed will at least start the attempt at becoming a productive plant.
The instruction booklet is inside the bucket and advises: "The cooler the storage temperature, the longer the storage life of your seeds. ... The best place to store your seed would be in a cool, dry, dark location such as a basement. For best results store unopened can in a refrigerator or freezer."
Unfortunately, you get this last bit of advice only AFTER opening the bucket (the "can") and reading the instruction booklet encased therein.
Oh, well. I will still store this bucket in the freezer, probably placing the packets in ziplock freezer storage bags, then back into the bucket.
I won't plant the seeds this season (2013), as the drought (in central Texas, anyway) is predicted to break longstanding records.
Germination test dates range from 6/2012 (carrot, corn, leaf lettuce, onion, sweet pepper, radish, summer squash) to 12/2012 (winter squash).
Germination rate varies from a low of 84%, Eggplant, Black Beauty to a high of 95%, Cabbage, Golden Acre.
The rest of the list with corresponding germ. rate is as follows:
85%: Bean, Bush, Blue Lake; Beet, Detroit, Dark Red; Carrot, Scarlet Nantes; Cucumber, Marketmore 76; Lettuce, Leaf, Black Seeded Simpson; Lettuce, Romaine, Cimmarron; Onion, White Sweet Spanish; Pea (2 pkts) Lincoln; Pepper, Sweet, Yolo Wonder L; Radish, Champion; Squash, Winter, Spaghetti.
87%: Spinach, Bloomsdale Long Standing.
88%: Tomato, Rutgers VF; Squash, Summer, Crookneck.
89%: Swiss Chard, Lucullus.
90%: Squash, Summer, Zucchini Black Beauty; Kohlrabi, Early White Vienna.
92%: Squash, Winter, Pink Bananna Jumbo.
93%: Corn (op) Golden Bantam 8.
94%: Pepper, Hot, Jalapeno Early.
95%: Broccoli, Waltham 29.

Great Except for Old Seeds

"I like the packaging and concept of this seed storage system. Nice container and all seeds were labeled and sealed. My problem with it is that over half of the seeds in it were packaged in 2010! They are already 2 years old and that really defeats the purpose of long terms storage. I don't want to purchase seeds that have been stored a long time, I want to purchase some that will store for a long time from the time of my purchase!"

Survival Garden

Pros: great assortmnet of seeds for the price
"Great assortment of seeds. Before I purchased these I researched heirloom seeds and this was one of the best deals available. Certainly you can get a customized nassortment at some seed websites but at a much greater cost. I would recommend this to anyone."

Peace of mind

"I bought these for my emergency preparedness kit.
So far I have just planted asparagus, carrots, romaine & butter lettuce...They all are growing nicely..
Nice to know I can grow my own food in a time of need..but it's also just fun to grow things even if there isn't an emergency.

"I was delighted with the seeds I purchased from Costco. Though I have not planted any yet, the clarity of description, the quality of the packaging gives me great hopes for years to come. The price for all that was included was remarkable."

Great Item

"I bought two buckets of seeds for future use.
It is really hard to find these type of pure, non GMO seeds. It is great that Costco has
the foresight to offer such a great, much
needed product. The price was absolutely
outstanding. I paid $5 for one packet of
pure seeds at a local vegetable market this
summer.

A novel idea

"I have been putting together an emergency preparedness kit for my family and have included all the usual items, but this items is unique and novel idea. I like that the seeds are Non GMO (not genetically modified) and you can turn some of the plants to seed for years of propagation. I think this is a good idea for people with some gardening experience, good soil and private (non municipal like well or spring) water. This is a much better price than buying individual seed packets and these seeds are dried and packaged specifically for a 5 year storage period."

Review based on actual use!

"Outer Package - Rugged, tight seal, handy for storage when finished.
Seed Packages - Very thick Mylar, easy tear open top, quality zip lock resalable pkg.
Seed book - Handy! I mean Very Handy! Full of information about Planting, Care, Nutritional value, Harvesting, and how to collect seeds for Next Years crop.
Finally - The seeds....well I was skeptical at first when they claimed germination rates, especially some which were 99%, but let me say I have been impressed, these rates are conservative! I have been buying them for gifts. I have a couple for myself now and want to share my appreciation by sharing the seeds with others! These are much more expensive elsewhere too. NO, NO, NO I do not work for these guys nor do I represent them. They have done a great job and I just think they deserve a sincere, objective evaluation."

Non-Hybrid Non-GM seeds

"If you read the product detail page you will see that these seeds are non-hybrid and non-Genetically Modified seeds. Another correction to the earlier post is that hybrid seeds will indeed produce plants that have seeds. You will not starve because there are no seeds produced. Rather, the seeds that come from hybrid plants simply will not be true to their parent plants. But that is also true with almost any seeds you plant. Plants cross breed by themselves all the time. This is the "bees" part of the "birds and the bees" story. This seed offer is a very good deal simply because of the quantity of seeds you get for the price."

Hybrid or Heirloom seeds?

Cons: hybrid seeds will not reproduce
"Nowhere does it mention if these seeds are Heirloom. If not, then they will only produce one time. It is very important to purchase seeds that will produce year after year. Our very lives may depend on it!"
