disappointed

Pros: light weight
Cons: back rest hangs low nothing like pictured
Model Number: not available
"The box came and had also been opened so I was leary about it from the beginning. My mom and I pulled everything out and tried to assemble the backrest. The pens used to attach it were non-functioning. I called Medline to report it rather than stick it back in the box and return it so someone else would end up with the same problem. They are either going to send replacement pens, or a new one altogether depending on what the Quality Assurance department recommended. That company spokesperson was very concerned and helpful. Will wait for parts/new piece and report back."

A Good, Light Wheelchair

Pros: light easy to lift and safe to use.
Cons: this is not a wheelchair: cannot rider propel.
"When faced with using a heavy, standard wheelchair, we knew there had to be a better alternative and Costco provided it with the Excel Translator Rolling Walker/Wheelchair by Medline.
The walker/wheelchair is easy to open, easy to use, safe, and most of all it is easy to lift in and out of a vehicle. My wife could not lift a standard wheelchair but she can lift this walker/wheelchair.
Assembly ws easy, required no tools, and the Costco price was very reasonable.
Buyers should note that this is not a wheelchair that allows the rider to self-propel: it has to be pushed. For our use this was not an issue since we always push the rider. Also, we have not really used this as a walker, though we certainly like having that option.
Bottom line: good product, light weight , good price."

Not So Great Purchase

Pros: accessories like cupholder & bags for stuff, great back support, double purpose wheelchair/walker
Cons: hard to fold or close, long & wide when folded barely made it inside car, heavier than i expected, not good on slightly inclined or uneven surface, short armrest, break cord on the way, footrests far apart than regular wheelchairs
"Was very excited when I saw this item online and can't wait til we got it. Bought it for my Mom who is 85 yrs old. Merchandise came and I had a hard time trying to figure out how to connect the different parts maybe if I were a guy, it would be a cinch. When I finally got them together and had my Mom try it, she liked it except she said that it was kind of wide/big for her and armrests were kind of short. Another problem it barely made it inside the car not mentioning that I had a hard time closing/folding the translator to get it inside my car."

Disappointing Product

"This product arrived in an open box that had been taped closed. Gave the impression someone had returned this item before and it was just put back into stock. Had to return it to the warehouse because one of the breaks was pushing on the wheel and couldn't be fixed to work properly. Very disappointing item and the design of the "back" wasn't enough support when using it as a chair. Ordered another transport chair...not a combo...and it is fine. Would suggest doing the same."

Excel Translator Rolling Walker/Wheelchair

Pros: i do more now
Model Number: NOT SURE
"I have been looking for something that would have this dual purpose, so I wouldn't have to haul more than one walker/transporter - I just love it! I can use it with little or no help from others. A bit bigger than my 'walker' but much more versitile!
VERY HANDY AND USEFUL IN THE HOUSE AND WHEN TRAVELING."

Great product !

Pros: lightweight easy set-up
Model Number: Item # 478751
"Purchased this item for my mother-in-law who just had surgery for a broken femur. The ease of use of this product, coupled with the fact that it is only 18 pounds, has made this an exceptional purchase. She's presently using it as a chair but will move to using it as a walker as she becomes stronger. I would highly recommend this product."

Excellent Buy

Pros: pro-you get three medical aides in one, reasonable price for what you get
Cons: back needs a little improvement
Model Number: MDS808200TR
"Received the chair two days after we ordered it." I read all previous reviews before I bought it. Some said it was hard to put together with poor instructions. I didn't find it hard at all. I had it put together before I found the instructions in the side bag. As for the back being uncomfortable, the chair is designed for convience. If you are in a wheelchair all the time this is not the chair for you. The back is Ok for the way we are going to use it. My husband can walk but has a hard time and gets tired easy. He has been very sick he last couple of years and hopefully on his way to recovery. I needed a walker that he could sit down on when getting tired, walking too far now is out, so to get to appointments we needed a wheelchair.I would not recommend this chair for a walker you plan to use in the house, they are right it is wide. We have a regular walker, cane, and a wheelchair. But if my husband could get out and get some exercise he may not need them as much or at all. With this walker/wheelchair he has hope of doing so. As for the back needing improvement, they are right but if you are a person like I said not in a chair all the time it will make do. The chair is very well made, sturdy and not real heavy. I would not recommend it to anyone that is a full time wheelchair person, nor for in home use. It is great for shopping, appointments and being able to get out and exercise by walking and the convience if sitting down or being pushed when needed. Get a smaller walker for in the house. Also I like the brakes, it is hard pushing my husband in a full size wheelchair down ramps and trying to keep from losing control, the hand brakes and light weight are great."

Great Idea!!

Pros: light weight and easy to transport
Cons: small wheels might be a problem on rough ground
"My husband has a walker and a wheel chair, but since we are scheduled to go on a cruise decided to buy this combo especailly for the trip.
Today was the first day we had a chance to use it and really like it. It is easier for me to load in and out of the car. It weighs less than either the walker or wheel chair that we have. I think we will get a lot of use out of it.
I wonder why the wheels are so much smaller than other similiar combo units;"

Not for long rides

Model Number: Costco Item #478751
"Chazzam got it right. That was a good review. We received our unit on Wed. evening and were ready to return it Thursday evening. Our main complaint was the poor back design. It would not come down far enough to be comfortable, causing the rider to lean forward. The other problems were bulk making it difficult to maneuver in a small apartment. I believe that with a better back support it would be use-full for people in less restricted living spaces."

We are very happy with this walker/chair.

"My Mother-in-law now lives with us and requires a lot of help getting to and from the Doctors office or shopping. The fact that as often as not there is no wheelchair or electric cart available when we go to stores makes this little lightweight chair a great way to help her get around and for me to push her if she wares out in the middle of her shopping, doctor visits or just going to family gatherings. She is quite happy with it and finds it very easy to use."

Smart mechanical design

Model Number: MDS808200TR
"Overall this is a clever, smart mechanical design of a unique and useful concept. Family member has used a Rollator [also purchased @Costco] for more than 4 years. Now the translator is even better as it allows user to drive it as a Rollator and rest as needed; but it also allows a friend to push her over greater distances that are beyond her self-capacity.
The attached pockets serve good purposes for user and friend. All features operate easily; the hand brakes even allow it to operate as a Transporter better than a standard one, since the use of one brake at a time can assist in steering the Translator.
An improvement for users who are quite heavy [near the 250lb design limit] would be wheels of larger diameter, so that it could roll over slightly larger bumps in surface and over carpets.

Uncomfortable Hybrid

Pros: lightweight vs. a regular wheelchair, solid construction
Cons: large size, uncomfortable back, static electric shocks from handles when in use, maneuverability
Model Number: MDS808200TR
"I purchased this for my 78 yr old Mother who has COPD and finding it increasingly difficult to walk any great length. We already have a wheelchair but thought this would allow her at least some walking exercise until tired then ride when she couldn't walk any further. With the wheelchair she essentially had to ride all the time which wasn't good for her overall body conditioning.
In theory the Translator is a good idea; however, in form it is neither good as a wheelchair or as a walker.
As a wheelchair the backrest is far too uncomfortable--it doesn't provide any back support and the little support it does provide sticks in a line across the mid back area. The other thing is that as her helper I was getting little static electric jolts from the handles when I was pushing her around. The unit was also harder to push and turn than a regular wheelchair.
As a rollator, it also falls short. The seat is big which you would think is a good thing:however, it makes the unit too wide and deep. The Translator is not good for getting around the house or turning in a smaller room such as a kitchen. The size also makes it heavier (18 lbs vs. 12 lbs) for a normal/smaller rollator.
This is essentialy a transport chair with a flipping backrest. I figure we can use her old wheelchair in just about the same fashion. Have her push the empty wheelchair until tired then she can ride as a passenger.
One other short point: the unit didn't come with accurate or complete assembly instructions. I had to figure out how to attach the handles and secure the backrest by viewing the online photos and video of the product visible here on Costco.com.
About the only plus is that the unit is lighter than a full size wheelchair (18 lbs. vs. 36 lbs) so it was easier to get in and out of the back of my SUV. It is also well constructed once you figure out how to assemble."

It changed my life!

Pros: 2 storage bags
Cons: absolutely none
Model Number: 478751
"This is an amazing product. I can now go to a mall or store that does not have a motorized shopping cart. I can walked to the area I wish to shop and then sit down to check out whatever I am there to buy or just rest. Waiting in a checkout line now is easy. You can even roll about a little. People are very kind and helpful when they see you in your chair.
The Translator is quite lightweight and easy to get in and out of my car. I lift the front wheels in behind the drivers seat and then just push the rest over and voila! it is stored. I do have a mediium sized car... a smaller care might not be as easy, but probably."

Best part of vacation!

"I have MS and can't walk long distances but still want to move when I can. We bought this to try out on vacation knowing the hassles of airport wheelchairs and walking necessary. This product works wonderfully both as rollator and wheelchair. It is very light weight and easy to collapse. It held our carry on bags down to the plane if I was up to walking or held me and the bags when pushing was necessary. The airline just stows it on board with strollers, etc. and brought it right out for use when we landed! The one small problem is not being able to go over thresholds/curbs of more than 2-3 inches smoothly but for most navigating it worked great! Even did o.k. on cobblestones! It will be a great help to keep me mobile!"
