Good Quality, Good Bargain

Pros: good battery life, sturdy unit, easy cleanup, good a shave as any
Model Number: SPEED XL
"Purchased this because my previous Norelco fell out of the car. I wasn't sad!. Purchased the Speed XL for the Low price and I love it. A pleasant surprise. Sturdy Shaver, serviceable case, good battery life and you can rinse it, what a concept.. I like the extra set of heads ....don't hesitate buy it!"

Disappointed

Cons: no low charge indicator.
Model Number: 8245
"I wanted to stop having to use a safety razor for my head. I had hoped that the "floating heads" would help follow the contours of my skull for an efficient shave. Well, they did maintain the desired contact, they just didn't cut the hair closely. It took waaaayyy too long and still left stubble. And, after a couple of months of using 2-3 times per week, the blades would get dull, resulting in irritation and nicks.
I've stopped using it after a year of replacing blades with no better results.

Barely adequate

"Previous lines of Norelco shaves were pretty good, but the newer ones are barely adequate. Low power, low speed and thye just don't shave the way they should."

very fine razor

Pros: comfortable shave, close shave, quick charging < 1hour full charge
Cons: no light or other indication of low battery
Model Number: 8245XLD
"The razor is an updated version of the Norelco I've been using for years. It is a little more comfortable and charging is quicker now the that battery is lithium ion instead of Ni-Cad. I would buy it again at Costco pricing."

Not so good

Pros: very quiet compact, easy to clean
Cons: takes very long to get a good shave, cutters get warm, doesn't shave all the whiskers
Model Number: 8245
"It takes way too long to get a good shave, up to 20 minutes. I don't have that kind of time. It does not cut uniformly; one has to keep going over the same area to get the smooth shave one wants and thus causes some skin irritation."

Poor battery life

Model Number: 8240XL
"Bought first one two years ago. After 8 months, battery would not charge nor would it work plugged in. Philips replaced under warranty. Second one lasted 6 months, same issue with battery. Philips replaced again. Third one, after 6 months will not hold a charge, but at least for now works while plugged in. For how long, I don't know. All three were charged exactly as stated per user manual. There has to be a flaw with battery design for this model as previous Norelco I owned lasted for 10 years and battery worked entire time. Perhaps the new business model for Philips includes a lower cost on battery design."

Good value but lacks battery life indicator

Pros: extra blade set
Cons: lack of battery life indicator
"I've owned similar Norelco rotary shavers. This version includes an extra set of blades which makes it a very good value. The design is similar to my last model. The head is mounted on a flexible base which sounds useful but does not make much difference in my experience. The placement of the opening button is a bit close to where you hold with your thumb. It's easy to accidentally hit the button and open the compartment. The washable design is very good. My last model was also washable and this makes a big difference for daily cleanup - I wash it after every use. The unit does not come with or require a base - useful not to have to lug a base around while traveling, but some people might miss having a base for counter top usage. The charger cord can be used for corded shaving - useful if the battery dies. The overall build quality is similar to my previous Norelco rotary models. The biggest con for me is lack of a battery charge indicator. The single LED stays on full power until the unit dies. My previous model had multiple LED's that would indicate percent of charge. Leaving the unit plugged in will over charge the device. This makes keeping the device charged and allowing it to properly discharge somewhat inconvenient. I use it until it dies, then plug in and use corded if needed, or wait a few minutes until it gets a partial charge. The shaving quality is average, not great but good. I'd recommend this unit even without the extra blade set, but with the extra blade set included, it is a good value."

Great shaver at a great price

Pros: very smooth shave, quiet and long battery life, extra blade set included
Model Number: Speed XL845
"Great, smooth, fast, quiet shave! Isn't that why we buy a razor? I bought this at the Costco store when they were running a $20 rebate feature making this razor only $59. It replaces a year old $100 Remington shaver and I have to say that this is an amazing upgrade. The shave is closer, less "pulls", less "nubs" and it runs so much quieter !!! And to get an extra set of blades with this at the same time - outstanding! I like that the Li ion battery will not get a memory and that it should last a lot longer that the Ni/Cd in the Remington. The charge is fast and it lasts for about 10 days for me. Even my wife remarked about the difference in the smoothness of the shave. Very pleased all around."

Great value!

Pros: good shaver value and repl heads are cheap
Cons: would like a battery life indicator
"I've been using this shaver for about 2 weeks and I'm very happy with the purchase. My father in law recommended it after getting one for Christmas and I was hesitant because I was looking to replace a Norelco that was twice the price. I shopped around and looked at reviews and thought i'd give it a try. Good choice. It shaves close to the skin, is easy to use, fits well in my hand, and covers the contours of my face.
My facial hair isn't super thick, but on my neck it grows in a weird circular pattern that makes it hard for electric shavers to catch all the hairs. This shaver does a great job in that area. My father-in-law's beard is very thick and he says it works great for him as well. Give it a try!

Barely adequate

Pros: charges fast
Cons: quickly wears out; weak motor
Model Number: 8240XL
"I have had this razor for about a year now. I bought it to replace the older version of the same Norelco product that I've had for several satisfying years. But instead of the costly replacement blades, I decided to spend a bit more for this newer model. I do miss the charger indicator from the older model which showed the level of charge remaining. However, battery charge has never been a problem with my unit. A full charge can easily sustain a full week's worth of use. The problem, I believe, is with the quality and/or strength of the motor. After about the first 90 days of use, I have noticed a gradual deterioration. And even after replacing the blades, I no longer get the closeness of shave I've grown to expect from Norelco. This is not a good product for everyday use; rather as an adequate stand-in for occasional use around the tried-n-true manual razors (my preference is Gillette Fusion)."

This is a great value!

"Bought this for the price - it's great. My husband loves it - easy to use & maintain, quiet, close shave. Can't imagine the higher priced ones are any better. Try it!"

Great improvwment from my Old Norelco

Pros: light weight, great battery life, low noise, piviting head
Cons: none
Model Number: 8200
"I bought Speed XL even after reading the negative reviews and could not be happier. I did not have the charging nor noise issues as stated by other buyers.. This unit is over 75% quiter than my old Norelco Quadra and an ounce lighter (though it seems mucher lighter). Add in this package includes a replacement head kit for future use, I could not be happier with the performance and battery life."

Pitiful piece of trash

Pros: none
Cons: everything
"I bought this product and got it home but it would not charge. I returned it and got another one and plugged it up to charge and it wouldn't work either. So I went to return it. I was thinking to try one more but as I stood in line there was 3 other people returning thiers for the same reason. So needless to say I took my money back and said forget about it."

It really is the worst shaver ever!

Pros: good toy shaver
Cons: very little power, cheap feel, useless
Model Number: 8245
"I bought one of these and thought it was just a defective one, returned it and the second one was just as bad. Feels like a toy, very little power. Surprised Costco would sell such an awful product. Any positive review must be from someone who has little or no hair and has never used an electric razor before."

Excellent Razor

Pros: close fast cool shave.
Cons: a bit ineffective in tight spaces.
Model Number: 8240XL
"I've used this razor for a year and it does a very good job, shaving closely with no burn. I also have experience with Remington and Braun foil razors, but the first time I used this Norelco it gave me a closer shave - with one exception. It seems to have difficulty getting close around and just under my nose. Whether this is a feature of my face or not I cannot tell. I use my old Remington to touch up that location as needed."

Great Shaver

Pros: fast and smooth shave
Cons: miss the full chg status indicator
"I have used Norelco's for years and they have always lasted a long time. The current model with the additional cutting rows in the head provides a faster and smoother shave then the previous model Norelco with only one row of cutters. I have had my 8240xl for a year now and have had no problems with it."
