bad product and bad customer service

Pros: none
Cons: everything the unit does not work service
Model Number: scanjet 5590
"I just got this scanner from Costco. and i want to install it on my mac. many problems in installation. not PNP. searched the web for a solution as i founded out the many are very unhappy with hp scanners. after 4 hours i decide to call The hp suport after reading about them on the web. I should have just trusted the web and not call them. after they asked me a million question about myself and the scanner. they told me that i have to fax to them a proof of purchase so they can help me( why wouldn't they say that from the beging) but they like to steel you personal information first. I gave them the serial number which should show it was new and never ben registered before.Im tired of hp and the trash they are selling so i'll pack this junk and take it back to Costco today. would have been much easier to help me with it since its an hp product and anything they were going to help me with would have been to improve the hp image. no more hp in my life"

Don't Waste Your Time

Pros: it worked for 20 minutes
Cons: it stopped working after 20 minutes, no instructions, error messages pop up constantly
Model Number: HP ScanJet 5590
"I'm becoming convinced that anytime a company like HP puts something on sale at Costco it's because the item is flawed. That's putting it lightly with this total piece of junk. From the moment you open the box and realize there are NO INSTRUCTIONS, it's an aggravating endeavor. But, being the semi-techie that I am, not a biggie. So I had it up and running and scanning quite quickly. The joy lasted about 15 minutes. An error message began popping up regarding a communication issue. I'd have to force quit, restart, blah blah blah, and finally it might start working again. But, of course, within minutes it was giving me the error message again. After 3 hours of trying to figure out why it was randomly working and then quitting, I gave up. This is a total piece of garbage that is being packed back into its box as I type this. I'm so aggravated I'm not even going to worry about putting things back the way they came...Costco can ship it back to HP in a pile of mess for all I care."

Bad Scanner

Pros: flatbed scanning and slide scanning work well
Cons: twain driver often crashes, adf simply is not reliable and does not work
Model Number: HP 5590
"DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER!!
I have owned this scanner for three years. It was originally bought to be used to convert about 500 pages to pdfs. It started out scanning and after 5 pages it jammed. After 20 minutes of continous use it just slows to a crawl.
I have used this scanner with multiple pc's with multiple configurations and all had the same outcome. TWAIN driver is very finicky and often crashes or hangs up the cpu requiring a restart.
Misfeeds are common place and often occur in the middle of a ducument requiring a redo of the ENTIRE document. This quickly becomes a futile effort and the user has to revert to either doing small number of pages (3-5) or just using the flatbed with negates the point of getting the ADF.
The slide scanning and the flatbed work well which is why I would rate it as 2 stars. The ADF is a DISASTER and more often jams or misfeeds. Which is why I dropped my rating back to a single star. If you are contemplating unattended high volume scanning DO NOT BUY this device.
I am very tech saavy and have had to self diagnose and fix issues with this scanner, TWAIN driver, and WIA interfaces. HP tech support simply points you to the web site to download and update drivers and each update simply causes more compatibilty issues and crashes. The tech support people will have you on the phone forever checking cords and cables and installing and uninstalling things and when everyhting is said and done they leave you with either one of two senarios 1. your PC has registry errors and it is all your fault or 2. do not use the TWAIN driver and use the WIA driver (which is actually more stable) and live with it. I found this to be extremely frustrating after spending so much money on a device.
BOTTOM LINE: DO NOT BUY! Save your money and your time.
If you really need a dependable high volume scanner with a TWAIN driver and dependable ADF buy a Fujitsu fi 6130. It is much more expensive but it REALLY works."
