Good value

Pros: excellent optics good eq mount price is right
Cons: the star pointer the 20mm erect-view eyepiece
Model Number: Celestron Astromster 76 EQ #31035
"Small long-focal length reflectors such as this one have a reputation for being good planetary and double star performers. I didn't know what to expect with the Celestron Astromaster 76EQ, but when I saw that this scope had a collimatable primary mirror at a camera store in Dublin, my hopes ran high that this could be a good scope. So not long after I returned home, I ordered this scope from Costco. When I finally opened the box and tried the scope out (without even checking the collimation), I was pleasantly surprised to see a sharp view of Jupiter using the 10mm Kellner eyepiece (giving 70X mag.). Two equatorial cloud belts plus a hint of a third equatorial one and a suggestion of polar banding was evident. Using my 2X Barlow with the 10mm eyepiece, the double star Castor showed two nice Airy disks. When extending the tripod legs fully out, the views seemed to vibrate a lot when using really high power - I bought vibration pads that will hopefully remedy this. As others have said about these Astromaster line of scopes, the star pointer is useless. Also, this scope should be marketed as an astronomical telescope (given the EQ mount) and not a terrestrial one - a 20 mm Kellner eyepiece should have been included (like the Astromaster 70) instead of the inferior 20mm erect image one."

Poor optics - I'd rather buy a good binoculars

"Not worth for even $50 bucks. The best I could see is a closeup of the full moon but I could get that with a good binoculars which will cost lot less than this one and is easy to spot the large moon..forget about spotting Jupiter or any other distance planets as this product indicates. Thanks to Costco's return policy."

For the price this was the best Telescope

Pros: chicks dig this kinda stuff on random dates
Cons: you only limited to the moon
Model Number: AstroMaster 76EQ
"this is a pretty cool Telescope for amateurs. you can see the ISS and the moon perfectly as long as you get away from the city lights. all other planets not so good, you can see Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn but they are just dots in the telesope. if you want to see those then a bigger telescope is what your looking for."

Great Telescope for the Price!

Pros: easy to assemble
Model Number: 76EQ
"I bought this as a thank you gift for my friend and his family. He had it put together and prominently displayed in his living room window within 30 minutes of its arrival. He was amazed at how well it was made and said that not only was it a great beginner's telescope but that he would probably never upgrade because it exceeded his expectations. I wish I had bought one for MY own family."

Not Recommended

Model Number: Celestron AstroMaster 76EQ
"My experience was, sadly, negative. Its pretty light weight. The weights overpower its tripod, causing a lot of vibration. The built in starfinder is difficult to use and doesn't appear to point where the telescope is pointing. Even finding the Moon was difficult using it. I was never able to find Jupiter, the 2nd brightest object in this summer's sky. I didn't find the manual to be user friendly. If you look on Celestron's web site at this telescope's video, don't be fooled by the rich appearance...its nice looking but lacks the rich appearance of the video. Disappointed and returned."

You get what you pay for!

Pros: a nice piece of furniture for an unused corner.
Cons: no computer, cheap optics
"TO THE NOVICE: The Earth rotates! As such, when you look through a scope at an object, the sky actually moves and your objects quickly leave from your view. So to compensate, most scopes these days have computers that rotate the scope with the earth thus allowing your object to stay centered and always visible. THIS SCOPE , however, has a little dials you have to constntly twist yourself to keep it in view. Add to that that what you see is upside down and a beginnger will surrender quit quickly. If you really want a gift that won't get tossed into a closet forever after a single night's use, get a scope with a computerized "GoTo" system. There are plenty of cheap ones out there. Manual scopes are best ONLY for looking at the moon. You may also see Jupiter and Saturn poorly and for only a few seconds at a time at best. No galaxies or any other planets. Trust an amateur astronomer. Scopes should last a lifetime, this will last a night!"

Great First Telescope

Pros: quick and easy start-up, price
Model Number: Celestron AstroMaster 76EQ Dual Purpose Telescope
"I purchased this as a gift for my 16 year old daughter. Set up was a breeze (about half an hour) and we were enjoying our first experience of star & moon gazing later that evening. This seems like a very good product for a casual user."

Awesome Telescope

Pros: well made, star finder to help navigate the stars planets, easy to assemble
Model Number: 76eq
"My wife purchased this telescope for me for Father's Day. I've wanted one for years but never wanted to spend the money for a good one and I figured the less expensive ones weren't worth it. Wow, this is a really good deal and a very well made device. I'm a novice but have already seen stars and the moon looks incredible. My 5 year old loves it too. Now I am researching constellations, planets etc. so I have some reading to do. This is definitely a very nice telescope for a novice and maybe even a pro."
