Stepping up from Point-n-Shoot

Pros: great package & instruction dvds clear and helpful
Cons: minor but the bag in kit is a little small
Model Number: D5100
"My last DSL had film in it. My point-n-shoot is still a good camera but is limited. Time to move up!
The short and long lens cover picture taking well. The information screen quick and easy to read on the back of the unit. The bag in the kit is okay for what is in the box. If you get the option flash unit ( I will ) there not room in the bag. Very happy, tell a friend to buy the D5100, yes!!!!

Love it. Best SLR camera ever.

Pros: price operation quality picture & color some, extra features that found on the prof. camera but, more expensive. zoom len 55-300mm included., hd video is a plus.
Cons: add-on flash can be expensive., few after-market batt. will work with this camera.
Model Number: D5100
"Decided to get this one over others - Best decision ever made on this purchase. Easy to operate produced stunning pictures. I ordered some len filters just to protect the both included lens. Ordered an extra battery for spare. A larger compacity hi-speed SD memory card is reccommended."

Do not consider

Cons: nikon support is very poor. their components are, manufactured in several conntries and do not have, the quality of years past.
Model Number: D5100
"Had a bad battery charger. Rather than send me a replacement, they insisted on sending the entire camera back. This was stupid and unacceptable -- and to my benefit I returned to Costco and exchanged for a Cannon Tsi3 (great camera). Cannon much better product and no quality nor support issues!"

Awesome Value!

Pros: value value value!
"Got this camera kit before taking the kids to Disneyland this summer and it's been fantastic. This kit provides tremendous value when you consider the two kit lenses retail at $200 and $400 respectively and cover you from 18mm-300mm. I'm new to dslrs and just beginning to explore all that this camera has to offer, but I'm confident it will serve me well for years to come. Compared this camera extensively with the comparable Cannon models and in the end liked Nikon's feature set better."

Power zoom needed

Pros: quality dslr and lenses for the price
Cons: features manual zoom only
Model Number: Nikon D5100 with 18mm-55mm and 55mm-300mm VR lenses
"Good camera, but manual zoom for the lenses can be awkward. If focus and exposure/shutter speed are automatic and the lenses have VR, why isn't power zoom provided? My 15-year old Nikon SLR film camera with a 18mm-200mm Tamron lense had power zoom. Why isn't that provided with the Nikon D5100 and the Nikkor 18mm-55mm and 55mm-300mm VR lenses?"

Great Camera, OK Lenses

Pros: great camera
Cons: only "good" lenses
Model Number: Nikon D5100
"I've shot extensively with Nikon's excellent D3100, D5100 and D7000. I recommend the camera but not the lenses. All three cameras capture extraordinary images. The D3100 is the best bang for your buck and the D5100 matches image quality of the D7000 for a lot less money and without a few of the more professional features of the D7000. For the cost of a D5100 you really can't get a better camera with video.
Unfortunately the kit lenses, while very good, are not up to the performance of the camera on either a functional or qualitative basis. If you find yourself getting “into” photography you’ll be selling your lenses in less than a year. I recommend buying the D5100 camera body-only and selecting better lenses.
18-55 is just not enough reach for a walk around lens and will require frequent lens changes to adapt to various scenes you want to shoot. Better to get Nikon’s 18-105VR that has optics as good or better than the 18-55VR and will allow you to carry one lens when you choose to travel light. In addition to the greater reach the 18-105VR provides more f-stop at 55mm and at 105mm makes for a good portrait lens with nice boheh. For a zoom Nikon’s 70-300VR is far better than either the 55-200VR or 55-300VR in terms of sharpness, rich colors, contrast and focusing speed.
Add a 35mm 1.8G or 50mm 1.8G prime lens and you’ll be shooting like a pro.

I love it!

Pros: great value
Cons: haven't found one yet
Model Number: D5100
"I have been using a Nikon D40X for about 6 years and felt that it was time to seek something a little newer as technology advances so fast. I decided to go with the D5100 and have no regrets. I have only had this for about a week but in that time it has really impressed me. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a high quality DSLR."

Loved the camera; but 2 lens is very inconvenience

"I liked the camera. But having 2 lenses 18-55mm & 55-300mm is very inconvenience. It is very difficult to change while you are out & shooting for a beginner like me.
Costco has a Canon 60D with a 18-200mm lens. I would prefer that to this.

Broken "Rank"

Cons: questionable warranty - you are at their mercy!
Model Number: D5100 55-300mm VR Lens
"Unfortunately we didn't get around to using the camera with the 55-300mm lens until after the 90 day Costco warranty was up and we were left at the mercy of Nikon support. The "rank" or mount that attaches the lens to the body was broken. This rendered it unusable and allowed dust to get into the body of the camera. Nikon said that the rank could only be broken as a result of being dropped or knocked and said that the repair wasn't covered under warranty. I am positive that the camera and lens were handled with the utmost care and the damage did not occur as a result of dropping or knocking, but after going rounds with the Nikon service department we gave up and have paid $167 to repair the lens and $105 to clean the camera. I would definitely fear Nikon's warranty as you are at their mercy in determining defect vs damage."

I do believe it's the best deal for the price

Pros: very good quality pictures., lots of great features.
Cons: none that i could notice so far.
Model Number: Nikon D5100
"I was never too much enticed by big cameras. Although I recognize their great picture qualities, I feel uneasy carrying a bag full of lenses and a bulk camera. I enjoy a good pocket size camera that I can sleep in my pocket. However, a friend visited us and his wife had just bought a Cannon 3ti. My wife was so amazed with the pictures it took just around our house that she decided to buy one. We went to our Costco store and found that besides the Cannon, the D5100 was available as well. I got back home, did some online research and decided for the Nikon. We bought one, my wife started shooting everything in sight and the results were so amazing that... guess what... I returned to Costco and bought another one to myself ... :) After a whole live dealing with small pocket size cameras, suddenly I have two DSLR's in my house. And both, my wife and I set out to friendly "shooting contest" and are 100% happy with our new cameras. We even compared our new picture taken in similar conditions using the Cannon against the ones we took with the D5100 and the Nikon's look better (it is a subjective opinion, though). I strongly recommend it."

Nikon D5100 great features

Model Number: D5100
"A very high end camera with many advanced features. Caution: this is not a point and shoot camera but in auto mode, you can take a high resolution, focused photograph almost a quickly as a point and shoot. Some of the point and shoot cameras I have used in the past have a long delay between the time the shutter release is depressed and the picture is taken. The Nikon 5100 will focus and take the pictre faster than many of those cameras.
I have used Nikon SLRs for well over 35 years and this camera handles and shoots as well as many of those old 35mm cameras ever did. Not as heavy as my old Nikon F2 or F3 but enough weight for good balance and stability. The optics included with this camera are very good but you have to remember you are working with auto focus lenses that cost a few hundred dollars and not several thousand dollars each. My older lenses will mount but do not work with this camera.
I have been very pleased with the results I have had with this camera. It will take some time for me to learn all the tricks this camera has."

"I got the camera home and it was missing the small plastic cover for the accessory shoe. I called Nikon and was on hold for 20 minutes. After I finally got through the gentleman could barely speak English and communications were difficult. He could not help me and said I would be receiving an e-mail with instructions on what to do. Long story short, the robo e-mails that followed were extremely frustrating! Nikon customer support is horrible! I boxed up the Nikon and it’s going back to Costco and I will buy the Canon."

Best value around

Pros: good value, good distance zoom lens, 5yr nikon warranty on body 2 yr for lenses (iirc), bag has adjustable soft partitions inside, longer zoom has nice bag and caps
Cons: booklets and video are just garnish, stock nikon strap uncomfortable and short, kit lens lacks bayonet hood, kit lens has cheap rear cap
"This is a great value for a new SLR user such as myself. The 55-300mm lens is particularly good. You should note that other similar bundles that you can find have a 55-200mm lens (not to 300) and also may not include the same type of bag and memory card here. Also beware that other bundles try to pass of cheap filters as a selling point. I'm happy I bought this bundle, and also that I went with the d5100 over the d3100 or new d3200 (Costco doesn't have 3200 in at the time of this review). The d5100 has the same sensor and processing as the higher end d7000, and it has a better dynamic range than the d3100 across all ISO settings. It also has a flip-out LCD which is very nice for down-low shots and menu action while using a tripod and other awkward angles (flip it around and activate live view for self-photos!) Anyway, this is a good bundle and value to start off with."

Love This Camera

Pros: easy to use, beautiful pictures, 4 fps so you don't miss a shot
Cons: have not found any
Model Number: Nikon D5100
"I bought this camera after reading reviews on various camera websites by professional photographers and reading reviews of people that had previously purchased the item. I wanted an SLR because I have young kids and felt like I was missing out on some really great pictures because my other camera was to slow.
I had been going between the Canon T2i, and the Nikon D3100, but decided after my research that the additional money for the D5100 would be worth it in the long run if I loved the camera. It has more functionality than a basic entry level SLR and so I felt like it would give me room to grow as my knowledge of the photography grew. And I LOVE this camera. I was able to start taking beautiful pictures right out of the box and felt like the DVD helped understand some of the features of the camera a bit better. I have been taking more pictures since I purchased the camera because it is so easy to use and have had multiple comments about how beautiful the pictures are."
