Great Carpet Cleaner

Pros: give it a try - great
Model Number: Max Extract 77
" This carpet scrubber was great. The directions were easy to follow and it really deep cleaned my rugs. I had not done this for several years and I was afraid what they would look like. However, they look almost new! The only reason I did not rate it a 5 star product was because it took me awhile to clean out the brushes afterwards. It was easier after I gave them time to dry out. Otherwise it is great! "

Best home machine I've seen

Pros: powerful motor and excellent extraction, heated air, really cleans well for a home machine, auto-rinse, comes with lot of consumables and tools
Cons: a bit on the heavy side, power-shot trigger is heavy; hurts my arthritis, poorly designed manual minimal instructions
Model Number: Hoover MaxExtract 77
" During college, I had a summer job at a well-known carpet cleaning company that has yellow trucks and is named after an early steam-powered automobile, so when I evaluate carpet cleaning services or products, it's through the lens of my professional experience as a carpet cleaner.
Like many other people who ordered it, what I initially received was a lower-end model (the MaxExtract 66; despite what Hoover tried to claim, it's not an upgrade) that comes with fewer tools and supplies. I returned it and it took nearly two weeks to get the replacement.
This machine replaces a Bissell that, despite being lightly and seldom used, did not hold up well at all. It probably had fewer than 20 uses over 5 years. The one advantage the Bissell had was an internal heater for the water, to keep it hot. As far as I can tell, the Max Extract 77 doesn't do that. In every other way, this is a completely superior machine. Far more brushes in a better layout, better spray pattern, better extraction (removal of water from the carpet), auto-rinse, and built-in blow dryer of sorts to help speed up drying a bit.
I came home from work today to find my kids drawing on the box the cleaner came in (ironically) with markers. While I was out of the room for a few minutes, they grabbed a spray bottle of water and started spraying the box. Naturally, water mixed with marker ran down from the box, onto the chair mat, and off onto the carpet.
Grabbing the cleaner, I set to work; the stuff was well soaked-into the carpet. Fortunately, my wife had used it earlier in the day, so it was already full of (now cold) water and detergent. It took some scrubbing and a lot of power-shots from the trigger, but all the marker is out of my beige carpet. Less than an hour later, with no fan blowing on it and the windows closed, the carpet is almost dry to the touch.
I've never had a home carpet cleaner perform this well. It's not a professional truck-mounted steam system - nothing compares to those for cleaning power - but it's by far the best home equipment I've ever used. If you want to really lengthen the time between professional cleanings, you need to get one of these! "

instructions incomplete, not thorough

Pros: easy to use
Cons: drips when returning to kitchen after cleaning cyc
Model Number: FH50222
" After hoover sent the wrong cleaner, (their error) I had to wait until it was returned to hoover's stock before the correct cleaner was shipped. I cleaned 1 and 1/2 rooms using 3 tanks of clear water. Before refilling the water, I dumped appx 2/3 of the total detergent solution still in the detergent tank not knowing if it was diluted or what. On Monday, I called customer service and was told it's normal to have 2/3 solution left when carpet is only moderately dirty and to simply refill the clean water until the detergent is gone. Too bad this wasn't pointed out in the instructions since detergent is not inexoensive "

Product description is wrong

Model Number: FH50222
" The product description on the Costco site is for a Hoover FH50240, not the product you actually get, which is a FH50222. The following are the features described on the Costco site that are not on the unit you will receive:
SpinScrub® Settings: Customized settings match the surface you want to clean. Use Spill Pickup for suction only; Gentle to rotate brushes more slowly for lighter cleaning on ceramic tile, linoleum and sealed hardwood floors; and Power to maximize scrubbing action for carpet and high-traffic areas.
AutoRinse™ and CleanSurge™: AutoRinse™ deep cleans when your machine moves forward, and automatically rinses with fresh water when moving backward.
For extra cleaning power, the CleanSurge™ fingertip control adds a boost of detergent for stained or high-traffic areas.
As to the product you actually get, after an hour's use, it seems pretty good. The amount of dirt that was pulled out of my carpeting was truly disgusting. But I mean that in a good way, the unit was very effective. My carpet looks much, much cleaner. The unit loses a star because the performance on hard flooring wasn't as good as I had hoped. The included hard-floor squeegee was less than useless and actually left more water on the floor than when it was left off. This was on a tile floor so maybe it would work on a perfectly smooth floor. But, I don't think there are many homes with a perfectly smooth floor. Most hard floors have grout or grooves of some kind.
I will be sending Costco an e-mail asking them to put the correct description on their web site. I'll update this review with information on their response. "
