Good Value Bluray Player -- Two Thumbs Up!

Pros: easy set-up user-friendly menus, fast disc loading flawless bd playback, nice remote works with all sony machines, includes a 6ft hdmi cable, full compliment of internet streaming sources, plays music cds and will upscale dvds, usb connection photo video music playback
Cons: no front-mounted indicator lights or clock, ethernet patch cable not included, no optical digital sound port
Model Number: Sony BDP-BX18 Blu Ray Player
"I purchased this unit in store for seventy-nine dollars, kind of on a whim. We don't have a 3D TV, and I do have an available ethernet port for my home network--this unit is not WiFi. I figured this basic unit would be a good entry into Bluray and streaming video. I was right.
Setup was a breeze, it was pretty much plug and play, took all of about five minutes. The menus are very easy to follow.
My Verizon FIOS internet provides plenty of download speed for streaming. I set up my Amazon Prime video account and called up Rango! (the movie) for free and in HD.
The streaming playback of the movie was flawless from start to finish, and obviously it had very low video compression, it was at least DVD quality but even better--maybe not quite full Bluray 1080P quality but very, very good. I was very impressed. (Amazon Prime Video seems to be a really good deal, too.)
Next night, we popped in a Bluray movie, a remastered edition of The Santa Clause. It also looked really great. The disc took less than 30 seconds to load up and begin playback. Playback was also flawless full motion, excellent sound, too. (We have a Sony home theater receiver with full HDMI capability. I think that helps.)
Once the unit starts up, it will find a new firmware update and install it. Then you will have a full range of streaming capabilities, Netflix, Pandora, Hulu, Amazon, you name it, it's probably available.
So, overall, I am very impressed with this basic little unit and I would recommend it.
Regarding some of those low star reviews, I think you have to understand that this is just a basic player. If you need (want) WiFi connection, or if you have a 3D tv, then this one is not for you--sorry, you 'll have to pay much more for your BD player.
As for those who had poor streaming performance, my hunch is they may not have very good internet service even though they think they do. I don't have the fastest FIOS service, but I get at least 25mps downstream speed, and, as I said, streaming from Amazon Prime Video was flawless. I don't use Netflix, so I can't compare that yet."

Many features

Pros: quick easy instalation.
Cons: none
Model Number: BDP-BX18
"This unit has links to all the content on the internet and hook up was less than 5 minutes. High quailty 1080 dvd. I can't believe the cost and the features available with this unit. I could have save money by buying this before I bought the Apple TV."

Sony BX18

Pros: quick down load netflix
Cons: none
Model Number: BX18
"Excellant Product. Why pay more, does the job of than more expensive players. No WFI, but no big deal, just hard wired it.
Very simple to use, when first started a series of start up questions are asked, just follow the process. We now are streaming in Netflix and Pandora, no issues. Selected favorites for both of these sites on the computer and the Blue Ray players automatically loaded them. Great machine

Tricky deal!!

Pros: space saver
Cons: no light indicator
Model Number: BDP-BX18
"This Sony brand is very tricky because is a good brand for an excellent price. The real problem doesn't have a light indicator to know if is ON or OFF (with kids is vital). Subtitles are not available even in Netflix (with laptop we can use them, not with blue-ray). Other than that is good but not to cover my necessities."

Video on USB a mess

Model Number: Sony BX18
"I bawt this item to use as a USB interface with my TV, to play videos. The format of the video I played is "VOB", a standard format (or "codec") The Sony played the scenes out of order--and little did I know, at first. No subtitles were accessible, and no idnex of scenes were available either. Truly a mess. If this feature is to be included on a product it has to work. Period. This is a software problem, not hardware. Product returned."

Excellent Value

Pros: value, small size, great features
Cons: internet browsing
Model Number: BX-18
"Normally I do not review many products, but after seeing some of the negative reviews on here, I felt compelled... First of all, this is a lower model that does not have all the bells & whistles of the top models, (no Wi-Fi or 3D) so expectations should be accordingly. Since this unit does not have built-in wi-fi, accessing the internet features requires a wired LAN (ethernet) connection or a USB wireless adapter. I use a wired ethernet connection.
I am very pleased with the performance of this compact machine. I have streamed HD movies through VUDU, streamed countless hours of music, played media from a USB drive, and watched Blu-ray and DVD movies. I have not tried Netflix yet, so I cannot comment on that. The internet browsing is not that great, but I do not use that feature much. A small gripe that I have is the unit is a bit noisy starting a blu-ray or DVD movie spinning up the disc, and can vibrate. To remedy this, I found that repositioning the player on my shelf where there is more structural support eliminated the vibration.
All in all, I do not see how a person can go wrong with this unit for the money."

Plays disks ok, but Netflix is awful

Pros: pandora works well
Cons: have to register with sony's proprietary portal, netflix functionality is bad
"We needed a new Blu-Ray player after our 3 year Panasonic one died. We are avid Netflix streaming users, so this functionality was high on our priority list. The Netflix on this is awful. For some reason, they decided that you don't need to preview the video while you fast forward and reverse. That's right -- if you want to fast forward through a grisly battle scene (frequently done in my house), you have to guess how long it is and hope that you stop at the right moment. Plus the fast forward is so touchy that it's easy to jump ahead to the end. Even though the Blu-Rays played just fine, it's going back!"

Sony blu-ray? DVD player

Cons: none

"I am not up with all the new electronic technology but this was simple to hook up and use. I just wanted one that would play DVD's and Blu-ray discs. Price was reasonable and I am very happy."

Disposable

Model Number: BX18
"This player -
has DVD Bluray
not 3D
connects to internet with cord (not wifi)
has many apps, including youtube, netflix, radio & more
The above descriptions are everything that I am looking for in a DVD player, but I do not like disposable products. This one is junk. I'd prefer to pay more for something that will last and is designed to work well. I really liked the youtube feature, but, like other reviewers have said, Netflix is slow, clunky, and sometimes doesn't work at all. So I'm taking it back."

Best budget friendly BD + streaming out there

"If you're on a limited budget and/or limited space, this is a fabulous A/V choice. BD discs play beautifully, sounds great on my surround sound (Pioneer Elite VSX-82TSX + KEF T205 speakers) via the INCLUDED HDMI cable, and it streams Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Amazon VOD perfectly fine. As mentioned previously, to use the streaming services, you must have a wired ethernet connection. I am using a Western Digital Powerline set up and have had no problems connecting to the various services and getting the max speeds allowed given my current service plan. I liked this so much that I purchased a 2nd unit for the upstairs bedroom.
I have a Roku XDS also, and have found this BD to be faster at streaming. Probably because of abetter processor, but am keeping the Roku for the large channel selection.
But for the most part, this Sony BD is an excellent value."

Not good for Netflix

Cons: low quality netflix experience
"I bought this player mainly as a way to stream Netflix movies. Unfortunately, it takes a long time to start playing a movie and the video quality is poor. Our other TV has a Roku box, which works great for Netflix. I'm taking the Blu-ray player back to the store. Then I'm going to order another Roku."

This is a tru price performer!

Pros: price performer., has all the basic requirements for streaming, easy installation
Cons: does not have enough internal mem for bd live
Model Number: BX18
"I was skeptical at first, but I am completely satisfied with this unit. Has all of the latest features needed to play a blu ray AND stream from the internet. Caution: does not have wifi, so you will need ethernet near by. I did. Also does not have the optical audio output, but does have the coaxial and rca outputs for surround sound. My stereo receiver has coaxial, so good there. I did have to also connect the RCA plugs because my stereo does not decode the fancy surround for zone 2 and 3. For BD Live, you have to install a usb memory stick, but, they're cheap enough. I've had it a couple of weeks now and ZERO problems. If not for the internal memory limitation, I would have given this baby 5 stars."

Simple and Performs

Model Number: Sony BX18
"Operating this product is very easy. I don't use it for the BD very much. I love the online streaming. The Netflix button is very handy. This unit does need a physical internet connection. The only downside is that the iPod Sony App does not control this unit. I have it connected to a Pioneer VSX31 receiver, and the sound is fabulous. I stream Pandora all the time."

Great Player / Terrible Streaming

Cons: poor streaming
Model Number: BDP-BX18
"This player does a great job of playing BR discs. However, the player is terrible at streaming. About 50% of the time it cannot connect to the internet even though I have a wired connection at 30 mps... which works with all my other devices. When it does connect, I rarely get speeds above 1 or 2 mps with constant buffering. I am going to return the unit to Costco and buy a unit from a different manufacturer."

Poor Support, USB device not recognized

Pros: cheap
Cons: poor support usb drive not recognized
Model Number: BDP-BX18/BM
"I have had so much problem with Sony support on this unit. I tried to chat online, only to have a responder who is typing the questions out of a cheat sheet, not really paying attention to what I have to say. I then called Tech Support and talked to someone who is no better. I had problem connecting a USB drive to the unit. It does not recognize the USB hard drive, formattted in FAT 32. The tech support wanted me to upgrade the firmware to Rev 0029, which I did with no avail.
I'm going to return this unit to Costco.

No Cust Support

Pros: none
Cons: no customer support., does not stream movies, sony is not set up to properly help customers, never had this much trouble with electronics
Model Number: BDPBX18
"The unit plays Blu-rays just fine, regular DVD's and Audio CD's as well. Just don't try to set it up to stream online movies from any of the services like Netflix. Sony requires it to be registered with their website to enable these features. So far 3 phone calls, two emails and I'm no closer to having a registered unit that will play movies streamed than BEFORE I WASTED MONEY ON THIS UNIT. DO NOT BUY IT, RUN TO ANOTHER BRAND!!!!!!"
