not good picture quality

Pros: good featues
Cons: poor quality photos vs a old cheap canon
Model Number: Fuji SL 300
"I liked all the features but the picture quality is disappointing. I have a much cheaper 8 year old Canon that this was to replace. In fact the LCD screen on the Canon no longer works. To test my old Canon and the new Fuji, I sat in my living room and took virtually the same 3 different pictures with both cameras on "auto" then went outside at night and did the same. I then viewed all pictures on my TV. The old Canon had noticeablly much clearer pictures. I took the Fuji back to Costco and bought a Canon."

Very Good Within Limitations

Pros: has a hot shoe, eyepiece with diopter
Cons: only 2 f-stops, no remote release
Model Number: FinePix SL300
"Background: This is my fifth digital camera and second Fuji. I have been relying on my manual focus 35MM SLR for any serious pictures. As it is more difficult each year to get film processed, I need a better digital camera. Not wanting to spend the $1500 or so at this time for what I desire in a DSLR system, I thought I would give the Fuji SL300 a try.
Positives:
Has a hot shoe!
Lots of Zoom
Many camera settings
Very good image quality
Eyepiece with diopter adjustment.
Negatives:
Only two F-stops
Long Zoom
No remote release
Full Automatic Mode
No in-camera image memory
Overall, the SL300 is a decent camera for the money. It is NOT a replacement for a full DSLR system and should be considered as a bridge camera from a basic point and shoot or cell phone camera. The SL300 has a good grip and feel in my hands. While all plastic, the body does feel reasonably solid.
With all the information features turned on, the display can be a bit busy. You can turn off many of the indicators from the menu.
Images write to the SD card fairly fast. The controls are easy to use, and there are a number of settings you can adjust.
Like all megazoom cameras, the lens on the SL300 does have some barrel distortion. This is most prominent at long focal lengths and was not so bad that I consider it a problem.
The long zoom and light weight of the camera will require the use of a tripod or monopod to steady the camera for long shots. When hand holding the camera for long shots, forget about the rear screen and use the eyepiece so you can tuck your arms in and steady the camera. Stick with the old 35MM hand holding rule – shutter speed should be at least as fast as the focal length of the lens. At 500 MM, shutter speed needs to be 1/500 or faster.
I have only taken a few pictures so far with the SL300. The image quality is very good, but just meets my minimum expectations. Colors are true to life, and detail is acceptable to very good. Chrome mode in my opinion over-saturates color and reduces detail. The overall images at maximum image quality settings are perhaps 20% better than those from my 5 year old 7 megapixel Olympus SP-320. I was expecting more from a 14 Mega-pixel image. At medium image size, I rate the images from the SL300 as slightly worse than high quality images from the SP-320.
There is audible (but very quiet) motor noise as you zoom and focus. This noise may be picked up by the microphone in video mode. The default zoom mode for video is digital, which will limit lens action to focus only. I have not made any videos and do not plan to. If you plan to make videos that will require using the lens zoom, I would suggest a dedicated video camera, or at least a digital camera that supports a remote microphone.
A few “features” that I do not like include:
The full auto mode is factory set to ISO 800 speed. This ends up with grainy images especially in shadow areas. Fortunately, in program, shutter and aperture modes you can set the ISO from 64 to 6400 as needed.
You cannot turn the camera on with the lens cap in place.
If you are in shutter priority mode and set a shutter speed that is too fast for the available light, there is no warning and you get a black image.
There are only two F-stops for this camera. The full open or lens F-stop and F8. For long focal lengths, there is a F20 setting. The F20 setting is not a real F-stop but a neutral density filter.
Overall, the SL300 is a capable camera within its limitations. My primary concern is that it may not be enough camera for my needs. I would recommend the SL300 as long as you read the manual first and understand the limitations of the cameras capabilities."
