Significant improvement

Model Number: Garmin nuvi 3490LMT
" This garmin nuvi model is a significant improvement over the previous models - much thinner, better touchscreen interface, higher resolution, more accurate traffic status (although still far from perfect), etc. Lifetime maps and traffic are great. I took away one star because the points of interest are quite outdated in some places, which can be frustrating at times. But overall, this is probably the best portable GPS in the market. "

I had high hopes . . .

" This is my 2nd 3490 (First 3490; speaker was bad on mount, and unit would reboot during navigation when plugged into power).
Pros: Voice command works well for hands free navigation, although the second 3490 is not as sensitive to voice commands as the one I returned.
Cons: The mount speaker is too small/cheap sounding to accommodate a clear Bluetooth conversation.
Traffic does not include surface streets, and since I live in Los Angeles and commute within a 25 mile radius, the traffic feature is practically useless. Navteq (traffic provider) has yet to respond whether this will be included in future.
Traffic shows green (open road) when traffic information is not present and this unit has led me into traffic disasters when I least suspected.
I've noticed a few instances of sketchy/poor routing directions; my 7 year old Garmin Street Pilot c330 did a better job in the specific locations.
Overall – Save some $$ and get a lower LM model instead.
Voice command good, no point in spending extra money for Bluetooth capability and traffic since there’s no benefit. Use your smart phone’s Google maps or other app for better, more reliable traffic that includes surface streets. Unless I see more traffic information being added by Navteq, this unit will probably go back.

Horrible Product

" it didn't work well at all. I thought if i sync it with andriod phone it might help but everywhere my phone didnt have a signal neither did GPS. I might as well just use my phone for directions.
I ended up returning it.

So far so good, have not used it fully yet.

Pros: lightweight
Cons: none yet
Model Number: 3490LMT
" I do wish there would have been a bit more of a user guide instead of getting on line to look for the instructions. However it handles nicely and responded well. Quickly came up with info on a tour plan and travel info. "

Garmin nuvi 3490LMT 4.3"

Pros: best unit
Cons: no cons if purchased from costco
" This is by far the best NAV/GPS from Garmin after owning this and other models. (This model allows control by ones voice “command”.) There product support is quite good, once you have determined you are talking to a qualified and knowledgable support person. If necessary call back to get one.
Garmin however, seems to have some quality control issues. This unit replaces the 2 unit of the same model due to failure of the internal speaker. The speaker based on the mount continued to work well, but when used for walking, or when holding by hand, one could not get audio. Additionally, the power cord started to fail to charge the unit without moving it’s position in the DC socket and repeatedly started the count down timer to shut off. I would not recommend purchasing this unit anywhere except from Costco for the return policy.
PS. All units sometime suffer from cosmic failures to find position or are slow to provide instructions, and usually return to normal in a few minutes. Just use common sense to follow your own instincts when necessary, otherwise you could be on a “naventure”, and despite what you think, the traffic avoidance does work 85% of the time.

Model Number: 3490 LMT
" As owner of limousine company in Bay Area I have had many gps units. This one is superb, design, fast processor,HD traffic and voice recognition which works better than Siri on my iphone 4S.

Not Lifetime Maps

Model Number: 3490LMT
" This is an expensive and very sophisticated product but there is a known bug in Garmin's map update software that will prevent you from updating the maps in this device and if you do it--it will disable the device.
If you don't update the maps to the current ones, you will be fine.
Garmin told me when I connected the device to my computer to update the maps as there was a new series out, so I did so and it never worked again and had to be returned to Costco. Garmin Tech support had me go through a bunch of steps over the course of a couple of hours to try to rectify the problem, but they did not work. Continued to get a dialog box that said, "Can't Unlock Maps" when you turned the device on and it would not allow any inputs.
On my own internet research, it appeared that many people have had this same problem when they attempted to update the maps. "

Best Garmin Yet!

Pros: voice and traffic quality increase dramatically
Cons: no password theft lock
Model Number: Garmin 3490LMT
" Voice activation and traffic detection quality much improved with this product (traffic detection not available in all areas). I was nineteen miles from home and Garmin alerted me to an accident seventeen miles ahead. The unit showed the exact location, length of traffic backed up, and time of expected delay. I had plenty of time to take a different way. I love the split screen when exiting off freeway, given you plenty of time to be in the right lane. This unit does not come with password code for theft protection. "
